Would this be inappropriate?

To thank the teachers who have written me LOR’s, I am giving them a small bowl (a different one for each teacher) filled with Hershey’s kisses and a handwritten thank-you letter. To my French teacher, I also want to give a metal I received from a French competition. Do you think this would be inappropriate? I have a feeling she might be a little reluctant. If she is, should I insist or accept her denying it? I have another metal, if you think that makes a difference, and I have certificates for both years.

Thanks for any opinions! :)

I think the thought behind your gift to your teacher is a kind one, but I would be surprised that she’d accept it because she may think it’s so special that if you don’t want to keep it, your parents would like to keep it. Giving her a note letting her know how much you appreciate how what she taught you helped you win that medal probably would be something that would convey the same meaning and that she’d treasure.

It really depends on what you’re thanking them for. If you’re expressing your gratitude because you think they’re an excellent teacher, and also kind and generous, then it’s completely appropriate. If your thanking them for giving you stellar evaluations, then it would be completely inappropriate. Also, giving your teacher a medal that you’ve earned, seems a little bit awkward, don’t you think?

Express your true feelings, and don’t come off as a suck up, many teachers will resent you for that.
