Ok, so I was part of a group of 4 girls who won 1st place in the national Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision competition in 2006. we each received $10,000 as a prize as well as smaller things like a trip to DC for the awards ceremony. I was just wondering what would be a good way to incorporate this into my application (if it’s a good idea) considering that this happened at the end of 8th grade, even thought we did compete against high school students, and applications usually say to mention achievements in one’s high school career. One of my friends is going to Harvard and she said that it would be a really good idea to use it for my essay. I just wanted to know if that’s the best way to go about this or is it even worth mentioning?

definitely yes!

Sadly, it wouldn’t count for anything. High school means high school =/

Edit: Unless you want to write about it in an essay as an experience. I just wouldn’t place it under awards or anything.

I put a major national award I won in the summer after eighth grade on my CommonApp and got into Yale and Harvard. I doubt that was the only reason, but it certainly didn’t hurt me, and it may have helped. Yours sounds really interesting, and I think you should put it in–there’s got to be a little wiggle room in there for a $10,000 prize!

thanks for your advice! I completely forgot that I had this thread up here.

how did you spend that 10000?

I didn’t. It’s sitting in the bank lol. I was planning on using it to help offset college expenses.

Vote no. Work was done in MIDDLE SCHOOL.

You can certainly mention it, since it is a national award, and particularly since you competed at the high school level. Have you done any other research in high school? Even if you didn’t win any awards for that research, you should mention it in your EC section/resume. My son won natl/state/city chess champs prior to high school and included it along with his high school chess achievements. He got into HYP so go for it.

Mention it, don’t let it take first stage. You should do another competition like this for the upcoming school year. Was it the asthma system?

Yes, you were competing in the same competition, but not AGAINST high school students. For many, 9th grade is still junior high.

ok, I’m kind of throwing around ideas in my head on how to incorporate this in my essay. I’m trying to see how I can link this experience with some other personal aspect. O well, I’ll see if I can. And yes it was the Asthma Sensor Monitoring System (ASMS) named after our school =]

I’m sure you can. Also, if you use the Common App form, I believe you can fill out the EC section chronologically. Add it to the top, and a brief mention in teh essay will suffice.
