Would This Work?

Prompt:
“What work of art, music, science, mathematics, or literature has surprised, unsettled, or challenged you, and in what way?”

Do you guys think an unpublished written story would be fair game? Is it still considered a “work of literature” even though it is not published?

cakebatter: You’ve asked this question in another thread.

By definition, a “work of literature” is something that’s been published, copyrighted (or now in the public domain), earned literary praise and stood the test of time. Unpublished works, however literary, are NOT yet “works of literature.”

Colleges ask this kind of prompt because they want to see your critical thinking skills as it relates to a “known” work of art, music, science, mathematics, or literature. Remember, the people who will read your essay have already graduated from the college and have spent four years (maybe more) studying works of literature.
