I was wondering if being a tutor would help on a college application if anyone were applying to an Ivy League college, UChicago, NYU, MIT, Stanford, etc. I’m going to be a high school sophomore this school year, and I already tutor an elementary school-aged kid, and my friend that’s going to be a high school freshman this year asked me if I could tutor her, so I’m going to tutor her as well. Would these types of colleges like seeing that I tutor others?
Sure, probably as much as any other EC, but the real question is what YOU get out of it. Otherwise it’s just one boring little line on a resume.
The rule that I use for ECs is: Would I do this if I was not allowed to put it on college apps? If the answer is yes, pursue it. It will probably look good for most schools, not just Ivies, because it demonstrates leadership and an ability to help people.
