I am thinking about transferring from my current college of 1,500 students to a college of 11,500 students. The college I’m interested in transferring to has much more established, qualified professors than the college I’m currently at, and it’s somewhat close to home. However, I’m worried that this college will be too large for me. I got overwhelmed at times with the amount of people at my current college, so I have no idea how I’d handle that many more people. Do you guys think this would be a manageable change? I have other college options that are smaller, but I would have to travel further from home. Thank you all in advance!
It might not be overwhelming at all. Those 11,499 other students won’t ever all be in class with you or in your residence hall with you or in the library/cafeteria/bookstore/gymnasium with you. They will be spread all over the campus. Depending on what your schedule ends up being, you might only see the same 100 or so students all the time.
If you have a particular anxiety issue related to large numbers of people, and that is what made you feel overwhelmed at your current CC, then you should talk with a counselor about that. It is likely that there are good strategies you could learn so that you wouldn’t feel overwhelmed as often as you have.
As students move up in class level, they are more likely to be in smaller upper level classes in their majors. So the large college may seem smaller as you get to junior and senior class level, unless you are in a particularly large major.
The size of the college doesn’t necessarily effect the size of your classes or the size of your social circle. The campus will likely be larger. Is navigating your way around campus something that’s given you a problem before?
