Would you choose autofocus glasses (instead of multifocals or putting on and taking off reading glasses)?
IXI is developing autofocus glasses (not yet on the market). Presumably, the target is people not entirely satisfied with lined or progressive multifocal glasses, or putting on and taking off reading glasses.
I do not think that I would be among the first people to get these. I would be tempted to wait for others to get them and see what they think of them. I do tend to be skeptical of having machines decide what I want to do, since machines do not always get it right.
I have come to really appreciate having multiple pairs of inexpensive glasses. I would be reluctant to give up this luxury. Generally, I just take off glasses to read & can see well enough. After I get cataract surgery and correct for distance, I guess I will need readers.
Yes, but no. For now, my multifocals work … fine. What I really need is a pair of glasses that adjusts to my needs throughout the day. I need much stronger reading glasses when my eyes are tired and I struggle after I’ve been looking at a screen for too long. Give me glasses that adjust to that and I’d be on board.
My curiosity is piqued and I hope to become an early adopter.
I have many pairs of glasses including: two pairs in each car (sun and regular) lenses with the right prescription for driving, two pairs of computer glasses at my desk (yellow tinted to minimize blue light for regular use and clear for zoom calls), trifocal / progressives in purses, tv viewing glasses by those devices, reading glasses at my bed and couch, and a plethora of spares and glasses worn only a few times that just didn’t work out… It would be lovely to just have one pair that would meet all my needs.
One potential application would be for older people who use multifocal glasses but are at risk for falling, particularly when walking down stairs. With multifocal glasses, looking down to see where one is going down stairs may result in looking through the reading portion, resulting in a less clear view down the stairs.
Oddly, it’s hugely individual as to who is impacted by this. It’s less common than you’d think. It doesn’t bother me at all. Others, it’s a big deal. There’s no way to know who will be affected.
