<p>There was this girl that lived on my floor. She came over a couple of times and we talked about a lot of different things over the academic year.</p>
<p>One of the things we talked about was her scam of her parents. She would tell her parents things like “my books for my classes come out to $3,000” for instance, and of course, her books didn’t come out to that. She’d pocket all that money that she did from these types of scams. </p>
<p>You’ve got to be crazy to scam your own hard-working, cash-strapped parents like this (for example). Additionally, she wasn’t taking her studies seriously. I think she was on academic probation for the first semester I met her. What a waste of money and what a waste of a mind.</p>
<p>I think the parents have to be pretty slow to fall for that. Books RARELY come out to be that much, and it’s easy enough to check a booklist. Most schools even have a page that outline probable costs for everything; if she’s making up costs at school, they should be able to check. It may be harder for them to figure out she’s on academic probation if she doesn’t allow them access to her grades and everything, but even that shouldn’t be too hard to puzzle out.</p>
<p>That is crazy. Any chance she was an int’l student with parents sending money from abroad? I have seen that often parents who are abroad are pretty out of touch with what things are like here and how much things should cost.</p>
<p>One of my friends who was an int’l student… well she didn’t “scam” her parents… but I think they sent her more money than they would have if they’d lived here and known how much her living expenses SHOULD be. She wasn’t super extravagant, but she did kind of splurge for a college student. Like I said, I don’t think she was purposely thinking, “I’m gonna scam my parents.” I think they just didn’t know how much money should be needed.</p>
<p>I sometimes fib a little to my parents but nothing ever big like that.
Like, I told my mom I need $100 to get my hair done but it only cost like $60, but back home, it usually costs more than that to get it done anyway…</p>
<p>How many times would she pull that scam anyway? 'cause $3,000 is a lot of cake and if her parents are cash strapped I would hate to think about the kind of hell they went through to get her that money…</p>
<p>That’s crazy. I don’t know how she can’t feel guilty, she must be bleeding her parents dry. But my parents don’t give me any money anyway, so they would never fall for something so stupid.</p>
<p>Yeah, my parents are set on giving me what they’re giving me. I get $10,000 a year for school.
No, that doesn’t cover everything.
I have to find a way to pay the rest myself, like THEY did.</p>
<p>I love my parents, but they are significantly more wealthy than their parents were when they were putting them through college…why holdout on me!

<p>Well, the thing was, both her parents were deployed in Iraq so I don’t really think they could take the time to check and stuff. So they’d just send her the money that she asked for things like her books, etc.</p>
<p>Well it depends how she used the money. If it was just for partying or going out, then yes it is a waste of money. However considering that her parents are in Iraq and are not using it, if she used it for a tutor or for other school/living supplies eg a mattress, or just saving it, I would have no problems with it. You can’t really know for sure that your friend did not try just because she came on academic probation.</p>
<p>My parents give me a lot of money and I barely spend it. They call me and complain that I haven’t taken any money out in three months. I do however spend some money on Chinese food (though they request that I stay healthy). I think this is mostly for convenience so I don’t have to cook the meals myself when I’m studying, and sometimes to just eat with friends.</p>
<p>the fact that she’s doing that is bad enough, the fact that her parents are in the military and thusly don’t make a ton of money just makes it all the more pathetic.</p>
<p>I would do it because it’s terrible, and couldn’t do it because they wouldn’t have $3000 to give me. I also hope my parents wouldn’t fall for something like that.</p>
