Our kitchen is retro! We rent in NYC in a 100 year old building! I doubt it’s ever been upgraded. Drawers falling apart . . . .
DF, that is not retro. I want my drawers on Blum system, and everything up to,date. I don’t want to,cook on a stove that could explode at any time.
OK, I really want this pink Big Chill fridge and the entire rest of this kitchen (though I love blue and green too):

@NEPatsGirl - I love that Big Chill does the studio size fridge . . . very cool.
@Hanna - on one of my research binges I saw a ‘new’ kitchen that looked very much like the Brady Bunch kitchen you posted. It’s funny that some of those colors are making a comeback.
@Consolation - I love the French Blue in the Pro line, but I think we would end up with the beach blue of the retro line. I’m just wondering how it is to use a retro handle on the fridge every day. I’m a little spoiled by my side-by-side fridge.
I’m going to chime in because I spend my whole life worrying about design choices for resale value ‘appealing to the masses’
Unfortunately you have two choices… concerned about resale value in 4-5 years OR you want the kitchen of your personal dreams
If you are somewhere in between… you might choose just the refrigerator. A refrigerator is very portable and you could either leave it for the sale or actually remove it and buyers would purchase their own refrigerator. Buyers don’t see a range, dishwasher or cooktop as easily replaceable. Their minds think it’s a huge ordeal to change out those appliances.
Who is the target market for resale in the neighborhood? Is it retiring empty nesters?? If yes, good luck finding a significant percent of retiring empty nesters that likes the retro look
I’m pretty sure they are few and far between. If it’s a younger market, there will be a large percentage of buyers who will love the design.
What are you going to do about a dishwasher? microwave? other appliances? Frankly, the dishwasher looks like it may not have great functionality.
And, are you really sure you want to use an old style handle every day where you have to yank on the thing?
BTW… I love the colors, they are gorgeous. And I think they work really well with a coastal design in South Florida. But those prices!! Yikes.
@SouthFloridaMom9 , I like French Blue and the Basil Green also.
What cb said. Mix and match might be the way to go. I have seen pictures on Houzz with white appliances (or even stainless) and colorful fridges. For example, these guys went with a white stove and a turquoise fridge, and it looks good, IMO:

And it is in SD! ![]()
cb, here is one answer to DW functionality:
https://bigchill.com/shop/dishwashers/big-chill-dishwasher-panel/
A panel to fit an existing DW. Cool.
And the fridges are US made:
Would you consider using only one piece of Big Chill? Maybe the fridge or range, and keep the other appliances stainless or paneled to match the cabinets? Then your one piece is the crown jewel and if you move you haven’t overly invested in the appliances. Just a thought. They sure are fun and happy, can’t gave a bad day in that kitchen!
I think those Big Chill refrigerators that are boxed in by cabinets look all wrong. If you’re going retro, the frig should stand alone preferably on an end run of cabinets where you’d see one side. Otherwise you’re paying a lot for the view of a door - would be nice if they sold just doors to fit standard (less expensive) refrigerators.
I agree, that was bugging me too. They all have slightly rounded tops and it looks bad to box that in.
I don’t think they’re too expensive though. I’ve never bought a refrigerator but wandering around Best Buy has left me shocked at the ones that cost $10000 or more and look just like ones that are a third of the price.
I’ve been doing a lot of dishwasher research lately (because our kitchenaid one is on its last legs at 8 years old) and the Bosch’s are far and away the least likely to break and the quietest.
What I would do to incorporate it into the kitchen is get a panel made that matches the cabinetry and just hide the dishwasher behind that. It’s pretty common to do it.
Our microwave is in the island, just to the right of the sink (also in the island). It’s knee-height so you don’t really see it, and it’s a drawer one so you pull it open and drop food in rather than squatting and opening the door (which my very tall husband would hate to do). So, you could do a white microwave down low and you’d barely see it.
I like the beach blue pro line, I could really see getting that, but I am also really fiercely loyal to Viking stoves. I’d have to look at the big chill stoves/ovens in person to see what their quality was.
If I were going to mix appliances, I’d get a professional to help me. That can go SO wrong SO fast. Matchy-matchy I’m pretty darn good with, and my color ability is super good (like will that tile go with that backsplash go with that paint), but mixing and matching disparate items-ehhh, above my paygrade.
Speaking of color issues, this link:

I love the pink fridge in the kitchen, but it FIGHTS with the color of the trim (a sort of gross pale salmon) of the crown molding. And it looks like the designer changed the color of the crown moulding right above the corner of the fridge at the top there-that may be ok for pictures but it must look hella weird in real life. I’d also be whacking my head on those pendant lights over the island, but I quibble…
In this one:

The wainscoting in the ceiling is a sage green and that’s not playing nicely with the turquoise appliances. I don’t love the somewhat unbalanced and random incorporation of dark stained wood on the island and next to the fridge, either. Plus, the island paint does not quite match the fridge-that would bug me. I think if they didn’t have SO much going on color-wise and design-wise the stove and fridge could work together, but it feels like a hot mess to me as is.
If you are white sleek and granite, a retro colored stove a fridge are FINE!! You can easily replace with stainless or while to sell the house for just $1500 or so and take the color appliances w you or sell them separately.
This gives you what you want, and leaves it neutral when you sell!!
Me? I’d do all white, and pick either the stove or fridge, whichever is cooler or more visible. Then do a cool retro space age light fixture and table with eames type molded chairs. All this can be left neutral to sell.
Have fun!
@HRSMom . . . we currently have your more typical granite/stainless/dark cabinets-with-different-color-island thing going. It’s hard to believe how much I love this retro look. I agree that it might be good to go with one accent piece (fridge or stove?) that can be easily replaced if we move. The nice thing is the white/white is fairly neutral in the big scheme of things.
Some comments mentioned the questionable idea of putting a retro fridge in a cabinet - I totally agree. Would like it to be free-standing if we go that route. That’s sort of the point of a cool fridge (?).
I also agree about the functionality concerns. We cook and prepare food frequently so we need a kitchen that’s more than just “show.”
@MotherOfDragons . . . oh my goodness I love that second link you posted!!!
(except for the taupe on the ceiling?)
^^Somebody else had posted it upthread already, there was some stuff on it that jumped out at me. I don’t like wainscoting in a kitchen because getting food out of those grooves is insanely difficult. Although on the ceiling it should be ok unless you’re doing wild food flinging parties.
Yeah, wainscoting is gorgeous but probably impractical to a certain extent in a kitchen (?).
Maybe I’m having a mid-life crisis wanting pink or green or blue appliances. Goodness.
The scary thing is my husband is going along with it. Usually we keep each other in check.
Buy what you like and enjoy it. Live for the present!
Would you rather concern yourself over a few thousand in resale value or surround yourself in an environment that makes you happy for those next years? And perhaps that unknown buyer unknown years from now will be planning his/her own dream kitchen and undo whatever you do now?
Which would you regret more over the years? Making it retro or focusing on the resale value?
Great point, KKMama! I got sick and tired of living with someone else’s tastes in mind, so now I do as it pleases me. For it could be 4 years or it could be 10, you never know. Or I croak tomorrow. Paint is cheap, and appliances are replaceable. Tile, OTOH, is a pain in the rear to remove… Ditto well-glued wallpaper.
Smeg is another brand that sells retro/modern appliances

My friend in CA has a retro style kitchen and it’s really cute. Have fun!
