You may want to send the check directly to the car repair shop.

^Seriously a good idea. I had an acquaintance who was given money by one of her co-workers so that she could file for bankruptcy. She didn’t use the money for that purpose.

For loan oft loses both itself and friend

^Come on! This is not a kid we are talking about. It would be so insulting to do something like that!

atomom,
good for you!.. Sometimes people get stuck, and need help. That’s what friends are for, no?..

I have lent friends quite a bit more, and in one case invested money in a friends’ business that I felt had low odds of success. But in all cases, I valued the friendship, and I did not expect or wait to be paid back. I saw it as a gift at the time, I had no judgment about ‘why’ they were in that situation, or if I was ‘being scammed’, so the outcome of return had no impact on the relationship.

I would do it again in a heartbeat, but trust that I also have friends that would help me in a crisis or time of need, no questions asked. So in that sense I feel it comes around- maybe not directly but in a general sense of wellbeing and support that would be shared among friends. But I’m talking about real friends, not mere acquaintances. We just don’t keep count.

Then again I live in a place where we also don’t lock our doors when we are at home, we don’t live in gated communities, we are okay with higher taxes, and everyone believes people are equally entitled to the same level of healthcare and higher education, regardless of income. Different mindset maybe?
