Would you let a film crew in your house to film?

Do some Googling to learn the ins and outs.

My house was used in a Budweiser superbowl commercial a few years ago. They just filmed outside, and only for a few hours; in the end my house – which was just a closeup of someone walking out a door – was in the commercial for literally a second or two. It was a very easy $4,000!

Yes, in the past few years we’ve received 3 letters in our mailbox. Our house was actually part of a development in the very early 1900’s, so there are a lot of twin houses from the developer, who get the same letters. There were a few models, some have different staircases, different style oak floors, different wrap around front porch railings, but easily identified.

Tangentially connected because of the fame of the Goonies house, I know someone whose home is right across the street from the scene of a very notorious and well known murder that took place years ago.

She has said that there are people who stop to gawk at and take pictures of the house where the crime took place. People block the street, come on the her property for pictures and it is a morbid nuisance which is both understandable but creepy as well.

My neighborhood gets requests a couple times a year. Most are for exteriors (which I have done), but a few neighbors have had interior filming as well. It’s a bit disruptive but I don’t know of anyone who regretted it.

Atlanta is a hub for the film industry so the requests come from a range of low-budget Indy films to blockbusters.

This seems like a very common thing in CC neighborhoods! I’m shocked. While I know movies get filmed everywhere I’m wondering if more of you who have experienced this are on the West Coast?? I think the Chicago area is also a hot movie house spot.

My childhood home was used for a Pabst Blue Ribbon commercial in the early 60s. My dad was in the deli/liquor business, and we had a pool at home. The bottom of the pool was painted with the PBR logo and there were lots of women in bikinis! It was an evening shoot, and my parents would not allow me to watch; little did they know this 6 year old was able to catch a peek from their bedroom window after sneaking out of bed!

This is my googling. If people are getting $4-5,000 for outside filming, $5,000 they are offering me to take over the house seems much too low.

My neighbor that had exterior and interior (main level and basement) filming got something like $25k. And that was about 10 years ago (major studio/film so had a nice budget).

A movie was filmed in my neighborhood in 2023. Those of us with a certain style of house got letters asking if we were interested in being used for filming. One neighbor went ahead with it. I don’t know how much money they received, but since the film was supposed to be set in Arizona, the first thing the film crew did was kill the entire front lawn :scream_cat: It was replaced as soon as filming was complete, I assume at the production company’s expense, but that would have been a hard no for me.

Someone knocked on my neighbor’s door a couple years ago, asking if she was interested. They never returned, nor have we heard anything about a “Jack Nicklaus” movie, so it makes me wonder. I heard that there was part of a movie filmed in the Westmoreland neighborhood last summer, so you can’t rule out Toledo as a movie setting. :movie_camera:

Our neighbor had the opposite- the homeowners were asked NOT to cut the grass, water, or to landscape for the several months prior to the shoot. It’s a suburban house which looked like it was in the smack of an abandoned prairie. By the time the grass was knee high, the neighbors were already complaining to the city!

I know a recent Tom Hanks movie did some filming at the downtown train station.
Which was fun to see since my son got married there. And it is a classic MCM train station inside.

My sister has allowed filing in her house several times. Once it was a cooking show in her kitchen. Once it was a detective show and they put her and the family up at Kahala premium hotel for several nights while filming with food allowance.

She wasn’t upset about any damage that may have occurred and they paid her both times. She would do it again (has a lovely home).

Another person who allowed them to film in her home said never again due to damage done by film crew.

My sister knew the people who were scouting for a house for filming and knew it was legit both times.

The 2019 version (Gretta Gerwig was the director) of Little Women included many scenes that were filmed in the town common where I live. In fact, the whole town center was in the film. Both the town and homeowners in the area participated. I was surprised at how quickly the film crew built the set and how quickly it came down. The people I know who allowed the film crew to use their property were pleased with how the crews handled everything. Also, my friends got a new paint job that was basically free.

I wonder what your homeowners insurance would have to say about that?

We have lots of filming in my area in a suburb north of Atlanta. Filming here is becoming quite common. They even were scouting our neighborhood, years ago, as one to do a reality show in, kind of like the “wives of” but more the “neighbors of”. Too many neighbors didn’t want it, including me so they went elsewhere.

Hmm, I would probably do it under the correct circumstances. Now I’m tempted to submit our house - not sure if husband would agree!

A relative that lives in the LA area let their house with a magnificent pool in the backyard be used for filming. They were satisfied with how it worked out and would do it again. One thing they mentioned, I don’t know if this is just an LA thing, but apparently it is important to have a clause in the contract specifically stating that they can’t film a porno movie in the house.

Wow, sister never talked about anyone wanting to film a porno movie in their home, so maybe it may vary by contract or region or whatever?

Come to think of it, not sure I’d welcome a steamy scene not just porno. A steamy scene on my own couch if the film gets well known? Guests and friends may be thinking something else while visiting me in my house.
