Would you please grade my SAT essays on a scale of 0-12?

“It is better to be underrated by people than to be overrated by them.”

I disagree with the statement that it is better to be underrated by people than to be overrated by them. First of all, being falsely praised not only raises one’s self-esteem it may also cause one to push oneself to be praised even more. On the contrary, being underrated, that is, not recognized for everything one does or that one is capable of doing may cause lack of self-confidence. Hence, it becomes clear that it is a good thing to be applauded about something one is not and then resolute to be that ‘something’.

It has been proven by psychiatrists that children who are overrated by their parents are much more likely to succeed than those who are underrated. Similar is the case with movies - those which are overrated are much more popular and famous than those which are underrated. It is the basic nature of human beings to do much better in life when they can expect something in return for their doings. In fact, sometimes praise may even be the driving force behind an individual’s actions.

Perhaps this is one of the reasons my mother always overrated my achievements in the presence of my siblings even when she was well aware that I was no shining star. The main purpose behind that was to build my own confidence and immerse the feelings of my siblings into such burning envy that they too would desire and strive for it. This principle, even though very cunning and sneaky, works most of the time - in reality, being overrated could even be the driving force behind the world.

The superiority or overratedness of one thing over another forces both to do better than their current status. The concept of competition was borne by this very idea. A very simple example of this could be when God created Adam and ‘overrated’ him among all other living things. This is what enraged Satan and is supposed to drive him till this day to get back on man. Even though the above example could just be myth there are many other symbols in the world. Overratedness and competition go side by side in all fields of life - at school, at a workplace, at home, in movies, in sports etc. Hence, it is better to be overrated; it causes competition and is an integral source of advancement in the world.

Here is the second prompt:
“What are your thoughts on the idea that television has turned out to isolate people instead of bringing them together?”

It is wrong to say that the invention of television has caused the isolation of people. I strongly believe that the purpose of television is to bring together people from all over the world. It is an international medium of communication - in fact, it is more than worldwide, even NASA is able to show pictures from space to the public through television.

Just like the radio, the television was invented as a source of news and entertainment. It is remarkable in that no matter which part of the world you are sitting in, unaware of what is going on in the world, all you have to do is turn on your television set and listen. With the television, even illiterate people can know about current affairs whereas formerly people had to be literate to read newspapers. Hence, televisions brings together all kinds of people from all over the world.

Individuals can learn a lot from watching television - general knowledge, new facts, about different cultures, anything and everything! Moreover all this information one receives not only adds to one’s learning but also makes him/her want to talk about those new facts with others. Therefore, watching television encourages human interaction.

Furthermore, television also supports a ‘family time’ idea in my life. Every Saturday, I and my family relax at home in front of our television set and watch an action movie. This is a source of enjoyment for all of us and sometimes, it even keeps me going through the whole week. Hence, the television has not separated my family in any way - it has brought us closer.

Thus, it should become clear that the television has not caused the isolation of people. Overuse of television or watching television more that required has caused that. The television itself can not be held responsible for causing people to stop caring - it is the people who spend too much time in front of that television screen who do that.

Thank you so much if you take out time to read through this.
P.S. Please don’t forget to grade out of 0-12 [not 6] if you do grade it.

This is my first time ever to write a SAT essay and I asked my dad to grade it for me and he gave me a 3 on my first one. :open_mouth: Is it really that bad?

I would say 8~9. Never use “I agree”, “personally”, “according to my perspective” on your essay. I even see “according to me my own personal perspective, I believe -” on an essay…-.-…

Thank you so much!

Oh, really? I read somewhere that the people who grade these essays love the fact that you’re using personal pronouns in the essay and are actually using examples from your lives. Please do share if I’m wrong on that.

They love to have a personal example (not the entire essay, but definitely 1 paragraph) in your essay.

They just don’t like blanket or absolutely sure statements.

They don’t like:
“This experience shows that…”
“This proves that…” i*

They prefer:
“My experience supports the idea that…”
“This suggests that…”

You could submit your essays to Testmasters to be graded for free…

[check them out](<a href=“TestMasters Official Site: Professional Test Prep Since 1991”>TestMasters Official Site: Professional Test Prep Since 1991)

:)

Feed: It is okay to use your personal experiences, but it is NOT okay to say “my opinion is” or the such. It is YOUR essay; naturally, it is your opinion. It is redundant to say “I believe,” etc.

In my experience, I think that the average personal example is weaker than the average literary or historical (or even current events) example. I’ve always regarded personal examples as a last resort to be used when nothing else comes to mind. I’ve never used them in my SAT essays. I think they are fine to use for one supporting paragraph if need be. Ultimately, what matters is that it doesn’t sound like you’re BSing your way through your essay by making up personal stories. When you support your thesis with a book or a historical figure, your reader already has background knowledge about your example.

@arwen15 - Thanks for the site but it only grades the essays one can write about the prompts provided there. I’ve been searching all over for a SAT essay grader which grades essays about the prompt you choose to write on because I’ve been taking practice tests from books. And I think it’s better to practice for the essay by handwriting it instead of typing it. Thanks though. Testmasters is an interesting site! Didn’t know about it before. Been bookmarked.

@iAppler - Oh, I understand. You’re absolutely correct. My English teacher told me the same exact thing a few days ago. Thanks!

@amb3r - So what you’re saying is it’s not a great thing to do when you have other examples in your mind, but it’s a good thing to do when you don’t. Right?

Also, if you choose to include a popular saying of a person do they check the authenticity of the quotation itself? I mean, suppose if you’re writing on the topic of the existence of a Utopia. If you want to mention the saying, ‘Abandon all hopes of Utopia - there are people invovled’ and you don’t remember who said it… what do you do? Do you just go 'A popular saying goes… ’ or is it better to not include it at all?

Nice essays…I’d double check your word usage though (e.g. in first para it should be “resolve to be” rather than “resolute.” Third para–immerse might not be the best choice. Do you mean “transform?”

I think it’s fine to put in a popular expression if it fits & is not attributed. The readers are not grading this 100% on proper/exact content – a lot is organization, support of your thesis, clarity, etc.
