WOULD YOU RATHER--Boarding School Edition

@Altras riiiiiight, uh huh /:slight_smile:
NMH

Choate or Hotchkiss?

@Altras Lawrenceville! I went to their summer program and I loved it. Also, NMH is too far north.

Definitely Choate lol!!!

girls- Emma Willard or Ms. Porters
guys- Belmont Hill or Avon

Miss Porter’s, almost applied there.

Deerfield or Concord?

Re: Girls schools, Emma Willard hands down!. The founder believed girls deserved to get the same kind of education boys got, whereas Miss Porter’s was mostly a finishing school for rich girls who were taught how to be good wives.

Putney or White Mountain School?

Putney! I know a girl who goes there and she loves it. It’s a beautiful and inclusive school.

Battle of the Saints: St. Mark’s or St. Paul’s?

St. Mark’s

Taft or Tabor?

Peddie or Blair?

Taft and Blair

Choate or Hotchkiss?

Hotchkiss! They have an amazing golf course - on campus and amazing views!

Hotchkiss or Deerfield?

Hmm that’s hard to say; they’re both rivals of schools i’m applying to but i’d have to say Hotchkiss

Thacher or SAS?

THACHER! Though the cultures are VERY similar.

On the surface, they couldn’t be more different. St Andrew’s School, where Dead Poet’s Society was filmed, is next to a beautiful pond and has stone buildings that reminded us of parts of Princeton. The campus is postcard pretty no matter the season. The dress code is somewhat formal; the boys were all in blazers when we visited, girls in dresses or nice slacks. But it was an incredibly diverse school with a very warm, tightly-knit community-- perhaps the friendliest we saw on our East Coast visits. Our tour guide knew the name of every groundskeeper and kitchen staff member (and they knew hers!) There is a strong emphasis on ethos and purpose.

BTW: When a waitress at a local diner/fast food place heard we were in town to visit SAS, she said the kids from the school were incredibly nice and respectful. I wonder how common it is for fast food restaurant staff to make that kind of comment about the boarding school kids in their town?

The culture and community is very similar at Thacher… but it looks very different. Everyone is running around in shorts and t-shirts year-round (unless they are off to ride, in which case they are in plaid shirts, jeans, and cowboy boots). The school architecture is a cross between a California ranch and Stanford. There are orange groves and avocado trees in the surrounding areas and lots of sunshine, even in winter. It was 76 degrees today

Midland or Orme?

Midland

Episcopal or St. George’s?

St George’s…

Can’t beat the views.

Asheville or Cushing?

Asheville

Madeira or Emma Willard?

Emma Willard (Madeira is GREAT. Unrivaled opportunities for DC internships. But too many Day students if you are a boarder.)

Webb or Stevenson?

Stevenson - how could you go wrong with Pebble Beach?

George or Tabor?
