S3 is applying for electrical engineering. Current old SAT scores: 630 R 750 M 640 W
New SAT scores: 730 R (approximately 700 on old scale) ; 740 M (710 when converted to old scale)
low essay score (4-5?) highish- reading score 37.
The reading score is much better on the new compared to the old sat I am but concerned that seeing that lowish math score while being considered for engineering major at competitive schools will be a turn off for ad com!! I know that schools “take your best scores” but seeing that lowish math (in the setting of engineering) seems like it could be trouble.
Do you think we should send the scores?
Just send them. The school will use the number they consider best.
The math score is the same as the old score as far as margin of error is concerned. The first score means he made at most one or two mistakes - not sure about the second one since I don’t know the new test. The new verbal scores are MUCH better - so send them. They can’t possibly hurt.
Send them.
Why wouldn’t you send them?
I thought that the adcoms might only see the highest scores (New SAT) which actually has the lower score in Math and he is applying for engineering.
They’ll see all the scores. Some schools used to have someone super score in a box on the folder so while the ad com could dig deeper it was easy to see the best score for each section. With all the SAT changes, I’m guess they’ll just look at everything and are probably still feeling out what the new scores mean.
I know my dh (who looks at MCAT scores) often looks only at the percentiles for them. It always surprises me, but it may be what they will do until they get used to the new scoring system.
