Would you take Greyhound Bus?

Hi, My sister has to travel from New York to Maryland.

We are thinking about taking Greyhound Bus to Maryland which does not have any stops and transfers.

Do you guys think that it’s safe that my sister (18 years old) to travel alone to Maryland? (takes about 4hours)

Please post your replys…

Thanks

If you’re talking NYC to Maryland it might be easier and faster to take a train. If you’re coming from somewhere else in New York I don’t see it taking only 4 hours unless you go in the dead of night. I have absolutely no experience with Greyhound busses, never even seen one, but I would think that any safety problems would be on the getting to/getting from the bus stop side, and not with actually being on the bus itself.

I have taken greyhounds across the country many times. Safety wise you are fine.

i have used the greyhound bus many times and it is quite safe. just keep an eye on your belongings at all times and you will be fine

I’ve taken Greyhound many times. I much prefer Amtrak for safety and comfort, but Greyhound is usually a lot cheaper. But so long as you keep an eye on your belongings (and don’t fall asleep), you should be fine. No one’s going to get raped or stabbed on a Greyhound bus, the problems that have occured are mostly stealing (usually when the owner falls asleep)

The Greyhound is cheap and fairly safe if you pay attention to your belongings but the quality of the ride is horrible - restrooms are awful, no leg room and there always seems to be a mechanical/driving logistics problem on the bus. Take a train if you can.

Yup, you do what you gotta do. Greyhound buses are dirty/cramped but they are safe. You’re surrounded by people. If there is one wacko the rest will come to your sister’s aid…but I have never heard of anything like this happening before.

Like other people said, watch your stuff!

And be sure to meet her right when she gets off the bus. The real danger is getting on/off at bus stops during the nighttime, especially since sometimes they can be a little empty…

My 16 year old daughter takes the bus from NYC to southern New Jersey (about a 2 hour ride) by herself. It is also a non stop bus. She started doing it when she was 14 with no problem. The bus is usually filled and I advised her to always sit with a woman. Works out fine.

I guess the bus doesn’t sound as horrible as I thought it would. As with others, I suggest you take a train. Just as safe, much more comofortable, and you won’t have to jump through rings of fire at security. Yes, you’ll do what you have to , but take a train if you can.

Some of the bus stations (DC comes to mind) are not in very nice areas either (NYC is an exception, right near Times Square so nice and crowded area with plenty of police presence)

I’ve taken the Greyhound from NYC to DC and it was fine. The ride took 4.5 hours, with a stop in Silver Spring first. NYC to Baltimore in four hours is perfectly reasonable.

It is safe; the train feels safer, and is more comfortable. I don’t see why an 18-year-old could not handle it.

Greyhound is fine. I’ve taken it from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia a few times and we’ve only had to have police intervention once!

i take busses from PA to NY all the time… never taken a greyhound, but she should be fine.

yeah, its fine. I know that on my posts I seem paranoid about this, but seriously, just make sure you guys keep your purses and stuff where you can see it. I’d also suggest putting your money in your bra.

I take greyhound from boston to nyc and its pretty nice most the time.

I have taken greyhound before the age of 18 by myself…if your worried like my parents were just get her to sit at the front near the bus driver.

Only Fung-wah buses for me.
