With the kids basically at college, I’ve taken up the piano again and am trying hard to practice regularly. H and I are going on a cruise for a week, and I will miss the opportunity to practice. On at least one cruise, S managed to find a piano and practiced when no one was around, but I’m not sure I would want anyone inadvertently having to listen to me plunk. OTOH, if I don’t take any music with me, I will probably wish I did.
Traveling musicians - do you carry music just in case the opportunity arises? I would certainly not be playing to entertain anyone!
xaniamom, I don’t know your level of playing. Anything memorized? If it was me, I’d probably plan that any practice sessions would consist of scales and arpeggios - three/four octaves in various rhythms and articulations, contrary motion, different tempos, etc. Also, any other technical exercises and finger patterns (think Hannon) that you can quickly commit to memory. I’d be more likely to bring a metronome hoping that I might do some real technical work than to bring music that I was learning.
We did bring the string instruments along on vacations when the kids were growing up. That was not the most popular of Mom’s decisions, but one of mine still remembers practicing while looking out the window at the beach.
Copy a few pages of a piece you are working on, and or would not mind having someone hear. A few pages in a folder won’t cause too much trouble in your luggage. Isn’t there a metronome app?
Yes - there is an app. I’m showing my age…
There is probably sheet music app for iPhone or Kindle…
Still at a level where I freeze if I try to play from memory, but the exercise book is a great idea. Hanon is around here someplace (I usually let the pieces I’m practicing constitute the “exercises”).
Don’t forget that listening to a recording of your piece is also part of practicing … and you can do that while lounging at the pool!
Why don’t u scan it? Then print hardcopies if u need it. In the meanwhile, there’s no clutter to deal with.
