Would you wear a sexy outfit to a dressy company party (a non-costume party)?
What’s too slinky?

What’s too slinky?
At my company holiday party the men (and women) look at the inappropriately dressed new staff and interns in their slinky low cut, backless, too short, too tight, sequined party dresses.
I think this question is impossible to answer without seeing the outfit in question on the body in question.
It’s YOUR bod. Where do u draw the line on too much (or too little)?
@GMTplus7 - would you?
Boobs falling out? Buttcrack showing? Headlights on? Looks lke someyhing a Kardashian would wear? Nope. Pass. Yup. Fail.
Absolutely not. Company parties of any type are first and foremost work events. Never forget that. Too slinky is anything you wouldn’t want your grandparents to see you wearing.
I never did but now that I’m retiring and if I still had the body to wear slinky dress, hell yes.
A company party? These are not the people I want to attract.
Yeah, BB, you wouldn’t wear those outfits to the office party, but you also wouldn’t wear them anywhere else either.
I thought the question assumes that this outfit is otherwise within your zone of acceptable sexiness. Are there dresses you’d wear to, say, your high school reunion or a New Year’s Eve party that you wouldn’t wear to an otherwise identical work party – say black tie party at the Four Seasons.
A good rule of thumb for women our age is, “What would Michelle Obama do,” or WWMOD. Here’s a dress that’s pretty darn sexy and yes I’d wear it to a black tie work event (depending on how it looked on me):
I was just kidding, nottelling.
My rule of thumb is very similar to what you wrote in #10: if it is appropriate for a White House event, it is appropriate for my company’s event. Can’t say the same about Hollywood red carpet events.
Honestly, you never know who will be at ANY party, and GMT-Plus’s implied special dispensation for costume parties is especially dangerous.
An example: a dear friend of mine had a birthday weekend in Los Cabos, complete with an 80’s themed birthday party. As much as I hate Los Cabos and especially costume parties, I dutifully went and dressed to the hilt in all-out Madonna-in-Desperately-Seeking-Susan-era garb. “It’s a foreign country so who cares if I embarrass myself?,” was my thinking. And I wanted to support my friend who had good reason for a blow-out 50th birthday party.
Well, most of the other guests either completely ignored the 80’s theme or made a vague nod to it (eg wearing a polo shirt). Who turned out to be among the guests? A Court of Appeal justice that I had an argument scheduled before in an upcoming month! (He was the date of another attendee). I dutifully made small talk with him, and it was clear that he wasn’t even aware that the party was supposed to be an 80s costume party. I was so embarrassed! . I’m sure that judge had the mental image of me in the ratty lace bow and bustier the whole time he was reading my briefs and listening to my oral argument, and probably completely forgot about the part about its being a costume party.
Lesson learned: pretty much any party can turn out to be a work party.
Dang. Y’all have better company parties than I do!!
Post #12, your post reminds me of a scene in Legally Blonde. And she won in that movie. So yeah, what’s there to worry?
The last 2 companies I worked for were really into costume parties. The senior management were all expected to set a good example come dressed in theme.
Coworkers tend to have really good memories when it comes to TACKY.
For some reason, they can never remember where they put your purchase order, your request for reimbursement, your memos, etc. But . . . . . they sure do remember that party where Sally put on that tight and tacky Marilyn Monroe outfit and wig and danced with half her boob hanging out!
It would depend on the company. For example, if I worked for Victoria’s Secret maybe, LL Bean no. It would also depend on if I was carrying my extra winter too much wine and too little exercise weight or not. That extra 5 pounds can really show up under slinky.
What do u think of a slinky dress peeping out the front of a tasteful knee-length over-layer?
Probably fine if there is nothing else peeping out too much.
