"The British press has apparantly been more forgiving of much more excessive foibles of Brits and Royals. "
Not the case. They’ll go after anyone they think will sell papers. Kate Middleton’s uncle got a lot of press “interest” of exactly the same kind, maybe worse.:
Not getting up for this one but I was in a hotel in Boulder for Diana’s wedding and I did order room service breakfast and set the alarm and watched it in bed until I had to leave for the work I was involved with at that time.
I’m getting up early too, and watching at a local pub. I wish I had a fabulous fascinator to wear! And lots of goofy British royal wedding items. They have the best goofy items!
I’ve already baked my scones, they are in the freezer. Pop them in a 300 degree oven for 8 minutes, and they are perfect. :D. All ready for the middle of the night event from the comfort of my couch on the West coast!
The Princess of Wales Theatre here in Toronto is having a viewing party, with refreshments served and contests for the best fascinator and ‘costume’. It’s free, including parking, available first to its subscribers and then to the general public. I’m not going but do know several young women who are. It’s apparently the only venue in the world that was named for Harry’s mother, although when I read that, it seemed surprising.
If, by venue, you mean a free-standing performing arts centre, then that might be true. If you mean a theatre within a larger complex, there are others, including the Diana, Princess of Wales Hall, part of the Attenborough Arts Centre at the University of Leicester. And there are other buildings, parks, etc.
I don’t understand the the incredible amount of attention this wedding is getting. Even normally dignified media outlets such as PBS have turned into various giddy versions of People magazine for the event - breathlessly covering every detail of the event no matter how trivial or boring.
I could kind of understand it if Harry were the crown prince or something, but he’s out of the direct line of succession and getting pushed farther out every time Kate has another baby. Harry is a minor prince at this point and is getting more minor all the time. He is this generation’s version of Princess Anne or Prince Andrew, and like those two, he’ll sink out of the American public’s sight soon enough, and we’ll all be left scratching our heads over what all the fuss was about back when he got married.
It’s an unusual twist that he’s marrying an American, and one who is part African American at that, but c’mon. Enough already!
