Do I have ANY CHANCE at getting into UNC Chapel Hill?

It’s very hard to impress UNC with women’s soccer because they pick and choose from the best in the litter. Unless you’re on the national level, don’t expect to get recruited. Don’t misread that, though, the fact that you’ve really committed to your sport will look great.

Tout your ECs, especially your internship. Focus a lot on it in the application but veer away from writing about/bragging about them in the essays. There’s a lot of area to address your ECs in the regular application, so exhaust it there but then leave your essays for more creativity.

Your big weakness is your GPA. Luckily you don’t have any Cs (which doesn’t make it impossible but does make it hard), but you do have a fair share of Bs. Get your counselor to speak to the difficulty of your course work. Maybe you got those Bs because you have one of the hardest high schools in your district? Tell him/her or your teacher rec to really address how hard you work in school. I’d say that’s all it takes to make those Bs less noticeable.

Overall though, it looks like you’re in pretty good shape. Apply early action. You can always bounce essay ideas off anyone in this community. We’re here to help.

i actually had a couple of B’s in high school…around the same number you had so i tried to focus their attention on me swimming for 5 years, and the dedication that goes into that. so like in my essays i told them that i spent a ton of time in the pool, but i still tried really hard to focus on my grades; emphasize the qualities and attributes that you developed through soccer and how while you sacrificed time for soccer and your grades dropped a little, you developed personal and mental strenghts that would serve you in college and in life…stuff like that

to cloy’s comment… i wasnt planning on playing soccer at the ncaa level at carolina but it is one of my strongest ecs so i was going to use it in that sense. ive also taken about the toughest schedule possible i believe so hopefully that will balance it. i have a question though about unc: ive toured it and it is really pretty but i was wondering what kind of social life it has?

unc’s social life is really highly rated. it consistently is rated as having one of the happiest campuses in the nation by the Princeton Review.

I really loved a few things about UNC when I visited it, but one of them was their opportunity for the perfect social life. Because it is a large university you are GUARANTEED to find people interested in ANYTHING you’re interested in. You like French films from the 1950s? I’m sure you’ll find people at UNC interested in the same thing, or atleast willing to be interested in it. The kids at UNC work hard (and they work hard in their ECs, too), but they know how to enjoy themselves, too. That’s what made it particularly attractive to me, compared to some other smaller but more highly rated schools.

Regarding the soccer stuff, I totally understand. I just wanted to make sure you didn’t get your hopes up for the NCAA. Good luck!

you have a decent shot–ECs are great; if you want to retake the SAT, you might wanna get that CR score up, its dragging you down. CR is difficult to improve in, but if you can get it to around 650 or so, it’ll help a lot. theres still the oct and nov testing dates.

cloying- if she were to play for UNC womens soccer, im sure they would’ve started recruiting her a long long time ago =]

Other than the fact that I am an hispanic male, OOS, I have very similar stats. What are my chances?

well the ECs/essays play a huge role, so i cant really say what your chances would be. but i can tell you one thing…being hispanic definitely helps lol. unc=loves minorities

Hard to say, but I would think being Hispanic would be helpful. My d is half Hispanic, but had a 2250+SAT with mid 700s on all her SAT IIs and national level awards in academics and athletics. In her case, I don’t know if the half Hispanic thing tipped her or not.

(In your case, being male may also tip things in your favor as well…UNC is about 60% female.)
