How do I write a letter of appeal to the financial dept. at NYU? If someone could explain the process, it’d be greatly appreciated.

Did you call them about your FA situation and did they tell you to write a letter?

They did not, but I’d like to write one regardless…
Do I just send an email? or…

I am wondering the same thing. I’ve read about others in earlier years appealing their financial aid and receiving more money (even though it may not be alot). Should I send a letter or an e-mail?
The only way i could attend NYU is if they offer me more money, so I figure an appeal is worth a shot

The financial aid appeal process is different for newly accepted students than for continuing students. For continuing students there is an online form that you fill out that usually results in an additional $1000 max, unless your family has had some verifiable catastrophic financial reversal. Newly accepted students, however, have more leverage in that they are not yet fully on the hook and might walk if they don’t get more aid. So I would write, call, have a parent write and/or call and do whatever you can to get more money while you still have that leverage. It can’t hurt to try, and don’t forget about the multiplier effect—whatever increase you do get is for all four years, so an extra $2500 turns into $10,000.

CASmom, Great response.

Just to add info I obtained through a phone conversation with FA office at NYU. As noted multiple times in this and other threads, NYU is not likely to change your FA award package by much (beyond the $1000-2000 amount, if that), UNLESS there are special extenuating circumstances.

Take a look at the form you can download from the NYU website. Go to [New York University](http://www.NYU.edu),
then go to the Admissions column and click on FINANCIAL AID AND SCHOLARSHIPS. After getting to that page, go to Applications and Forms. Next, go to right hand column for Forms and click on Professional Judgment Form 2010-2011. Look at the special extenuating circumstances NYU will consider. These are the likely scenarios where your FA package MAY change more significantly.

GLTA who are trying to make it work out at this expensive college.

Thank y’ much, all!
