I responded to Prompt 1 for my Common App Essay, and wrote about my dream to become a military officer. How will colleges such as Princeton and Columbia respond to my desire to pursue such an unusual career path for an Ivy League graduate?

Poorly. If you want to goto the military why are you applying to the ivy Leagues instead of Westpoint? They’ll probably reject your application and think that they are doing you a favor.

Certainly there are anti-military types at Columbia and other colleges. That said, be honest with your application, and see where the dice land. If you want to pursue a career as an officer, why let the potential fear of offending someone with no experience and a lot of preconceived notions stop you?
There are ROTC students at places like Columbia (they do cross-town ROTC classes, if I read correctly).
