Writing about my Deconversion for college essay (Please read first)

I’ve been doing some browsing around for people who chose to write about religious topics, and most people have advised against it. For me, I do not want to write about my atheistic belief, but instead about my deconversion from Catholicism to agnostic/atheist. My parents are devout Catholics and did not let me go without a fight. In the process, I have learned more about myself and valuing people’s beliefs than ever before. The essay would go over the process and culminate in the one night when I told my parents what I believed. I would try to emphasize how this has fueled my passion for science, yet taught me the value of respecting other’s beliefs (coming from personal experience). It would deal with identity as well; my name is Christian.

Can this essay turn out well, or should I abandon it completely?

Depends on how well you tell it. It could be interesting, antagonistic, or boring as hell. I’d try to not to come off seeming too pretentious but the essay could definitely work.

I wrote about religion. Well…sorta. I’m a sikh and wear a turban. I wrote about how i went from being uncomfortable with how i look to proud. But i guess it wasnt about religion, more about identity. My english teacher said it was one of the best he’s ever read, and he is a former admissions officer, and said he would admit me. So it comes down to how you handle it. You can write an essay, and then ask for peoples opinions on it. Its a touchy subject though, so be careful
