Writing about poetry as an Engineering major?

So, I’m majoring in biomedical engineering. Something I invest a lot of personal time into is writing poetry on social issues (somewhat slam-poetry). Should I include this as an extra-curricular? It’s not a legitimate program, I just do it on my own.

Also, there is a personal statement prompt for UC schools (1 of 8 q’s, 4 of which I must respond to) asking about our creative skills. Should I get personal and discuss my poems, or just talk about something engineering related to further my chances of admission into such an impacted major?

Last question (sorry) my math grades have not been consistently the highest. I actually screwed up on semester in Calc AB and got a C+ (tough, I know). Would it still make sense to write about math being my favorite subject?

I’d appreciate any constructive feedback. Thanks

Yes ! Anything the can distinguish you from being typical stem kid is a plus.

Engineering. I can’t speak for UC specifically, but many schools will want the applicant to “show” (not just “tell”) his/her understanding of what engineering really is about and how they are ready. They can expect strengths in math and physics, of course. They can look for your math-sci ECs and your experience with collaboration in that arena. It’s more than just the common idea biomed engineers “make the world a better place.” There is nothing wrong with including poetry, just understand you need the basics, first.
