I am doing community service for the local Special Olympics program where I live, and I was wondering if this will be to common and not an unique essay. i was think about writing about my first time going and seeing how this kid(not going to mention names) run up to his mom and giving her the most passionate hug i have seen in a very long time, even though his missed almost every shot he took. Now i try to be as nice as i can to my mom, even nicer than when she was fighting breast cancer. Before this i normally took my mom and all the things she did for me for granted, but now it changed. I know this means a lot to me because when my English teacher wanted us to start thinking about what we would want to write about this was the first thing that came to my mind, and i starting watering up, in joy and happiness. I am going to be doing much more work with the Special Olympics over the Summer and through out the year so maybe something else will hit me harder but I think this is what i am going to write about. I was just wondering if this idea would be to common and ordinary. Thanks for looking and your comments.

It sounds like a nice essay.

I think it is a great idea for an essay. Back in 1972, a very long time ago, I wrote about the Special Olympics that I was involved in as a volunteer. It was my application essay for Stanford and the prompt was “If you were to write a book what would the title be and why”. Stanford accepted me. I wrote that essay in less than an hour but it had passion, so my message is: pick any topic but be passionate about it. Good Luck!

Sorry, to me it sounds a little cringe worthy. I’ve been around the block with the whole special needs thing and it’s very easy to slip into trite. But it does have potential…make sure someone revises it before you send it off.
