  1. "Including" refers to "contemporaries," so it's best that they're next to each other.
  2. "During the past several decades" is past continuing into present, as is "have gained." You can't just use the present tense for "are closing." Correct fix would probably be "have been closing."
  3. Yes, "those of" would be more correct.
