Writing Question

Also supported by the community is increased education funding and decreased tax breaks.

(A) NO CHANGE
(B) Also supported by the community was
increased education funding and
decreased tax breaks.
(C) Also supported by the community was
being increased education funding and
decreased tax breaks.
(D) Also supported by the community are
increased education funding and decreased tax breaks.

Why is the answer ‘D’ and not ‘A?’

Thanks very much guys.

Increased education funding and decreased tax breaks are also supported by the community.

The subject-verb core would be “funding and breaks”-“are”. Since the subject is plural, the verb needs to be plural.

“Community” is an object of preposition, not the subject.

Oooh, I think that makes sense. But why couldn’t “supported” be the verb and “community” be the subject in this question?

Oops, the verb is “are supported”, used in the passive voice. In the passive voice, the subject is neither a “doer” or “be-er” but is acted on by some other noun.

“Community” is not the subject because the word follows “by the”. “Community” is an object of preposition, which cannot be the subject.

Here is a good webpage on the active vs passive voice.
