Writing Question

Among the Inuit peoples of arctic Canada, poetry contests are held to settle conflicts (that might otherwise be disruptive to families and communities).
A. (same)
D. by which families and communities were otherwise being disrupted.

Why is A correct and not D?

Because D is awful.

It’s probably wrong, too, for some reason. But this is an example of why what you need to do if you really want to do well on this kind of test is read lots of well-written prose.

In addition to what Hunt said, which is true, D changes the meaning. A says that disputes might be disruptive to the community; D says that disputes were being disruptive.

Got it! Thank you.
