An id error question
Please answer with explanation
Thank you

At age seven Martha saw the clown act at the circus and knew immediately that she would like to be one when she grew up.
A. At age seven
B. at
C. that
D. one
E. No error

I see no error.

Does the answer key indicate differently?

The answer is D but I believe it is no error

It’s D because one is ambiguous. It can refer to a clown or a circus. Though we logically assume that it she wants to be a clown, with the current way the sentence is phrased, it is possible that the child wants to be a circus (though she can’t logically).

In “Hindsight,” option D is the correct one for the reason posted above me.

Serves me right for trying to “help” while half asleep.
