writing question

so i was working on a kaplan SAT book, and i came across a writing question, which i think has 2 legitimate answers.

my answer was: environmental scientists are very concerned about the erosion of the ozone layer caused by pressurized aerosol cans emitting dangerous flurocarbons.

the book answer was: environmental scientists are very concerned that pressurized aerosol cans emit dangerous flurocarbons, which quicken the erosion of the ozone layer.

what’s the diff? thanks

well the first one is “concerned about the erosion of the ozone layer”, and not the ozone layer itself. The second one just sounds right.

“caused by pressurized aerosol cans emitting dangerous flurocarbons.”

This isn’t correct. Substitute some of the fancy nouns and verbs for regular ones, and you get:

“caused by people eating cheese.”

^This implies that those who eat cheese are the cause, NOT that their eating cheese is the cause. The ozone is getting fricked up because of the carbons being emitted by the cans, not the cans.

ahh i get it now. thanks a lot
