Writing question

The psychologist states that most people want the same things: (interesting and meaningful work, respect, and to have them be loved for themselves alone. )

(A) interesting and meaningful work, respect, and to have them be loved for themselves alone
(B) to have interesting and meaningful work, respect, and loved for themselves alone
(C) work that has interest and is meaningful, to have respect, and to be beloved for themselves alone
(D) interesting and meaningful work, respect, and their own love
(E) to have interesting and meaningful work, to be respected, and to be loved for themselves alone

Sorry don’t know how to do underline. The part with parenthesis is the underlined part

The right answer is E, but the sentence says people want “things”, doesn’t it imply that what follows should be nouns?

Thanks!

To answer you question, nouns are person, places, things, and ideas. Meaningful work is a thing (or idea), respect is an idea, love is an idea. They are all nouns or at least references to nouns. Also, the word things is a general term which can be related to practically anything in today’s world.

Besides, it is the best answer, which is all collegeboard is looking for.

E is the answer because of parallelism.

(interesting and meaningful work), (respect), and (to have them be loved for themselves alone) are not in parallel structure.

But in choice E, these 3 verbs are all in the infinitive verb form; which makes it the correct choice.

In choice D, all 3 are nouns. Is this not considered as parallel too?
Actually I was hesitant about putting E because of the word “thing” because I thought it’s not asking for parralel nouns instead of parallel verbs.

Well, “to be _______” is a prepositional phrase that functions as a noun in the context. Although (D) is also an example of correct parallel structure, “their own love” does not mean the same thing as “being loved for themselves.”

^, oh i see. i chose D lol… this is more of a context problem -.- need to pay mroe attention to the meaning of the sentence…

Thanks a bunch Begoner
