Writing questions

Hi guys,

I have some writing questions.

13)
Charles Dickens’ Great expectations is a nobel [in which] the main character becomes so [obsessed with] the idea [of becoming] a gentleman [that] his moral judgment is temporarily affected. No error.

Can you guys tell me which grammar concept is this question testing ?

Passage reading

Which is the best replacement for “ran into” in sentence 3 ?

1) encountered
2) met up with
3)observed
4) confronted
5) got hold of

I made the answer “got hold of”,but the correct answer is “observed”.

32) Of the following which is the best revision for the underlined part of sentence 5?

1)trade, not to mention on
2)trade, but also
3)trade, an impact also on
4)trade; it also was affecting
5)trade, and they also affected

The answer is A,but I really don’t get the logic behind this answer shouldn’t it be “trade, and they also affected”?

Isn’t it correct as is? I don’t see anything wrong… except for the typo you made… (nobel –> novel)

Perhaps I’m having a bad day, but the answer seems like 1. encountered. Can you double check that? I don’t think any other choices make sense besides “got hold of” (maybe).

“They” cannot refer to anything. 5 would have been correct if the pronoun “it” were used.

@Jeffryjung

The answer in 13 is D I don’t understand why “that” here would be wrong.

I doubled checked question 31 and the correct answer is encountered, but got hold of makes sense to me more. Why would we choose here encountered instead of get hold of?

That nobel was a typo xD.

^ Chili pepper is singular and they is a plural pronoun.

Also, I concur with encountered.

I don’t think I see an error in 13.

“That” is crucial for the so…that structure…

For 31, the term “run into” is commonly used to mean “to meet by chance” or “encounter”. “got hold of” means “obtained”. E would only make sense if you did not know the phrase “run into”.

^thanks a lot for the explanation.

I double check question 13 again and your right its No error :D.
