Writing sample: which to send?

one of my colleges asks for a scanned copy of a paper that I’ve written. I have two ideas, both from my APUSH class:

-a (typed) DBQ about how the early presidents established the evolving Constitutional role of the Presidency and the Federal government (my teacher said it’s one of the best essays he’s ever read and used it as an example for other classes)

-a research paper about the Reagan administration’s involvement in the Iran-Contra Scandal (it’s 10 pages and I got an A on it)

which do you think would be more impressive or a better representation?

How long is the first one?

It’s about 3 pages (double spaced).

My suggestion would be to use the first one; first of all, it is short enough to be read (or at least scanned over quickly) and secondly, the topic is less specific and will allow your admission committee’s reader(s) to look for clarity and skill rather than muddle through thick political science-related debate.

Best!

I agree with Three Scholars.

Don’t burden the extremely busy admissions readers with a 10-page paper when you have an excellent 3-page one available.

yeah, that makes sense. thanks everyone.
