writing the common app transfer essay for one school only?

I’m applying as a transfer for spring 10 for just one school (I’ll apply to more for fall 10 if I don’t get in). I’d like to write the common app essay specifically about Smith College but if I do so they’ll know they are the only school I’m applying to. While I know the specifics will strengthen my essay I’m worried that they won’t take me seriously. What are your thoughts? This is what the essay prompt says…

Please provide a statement (250 words minimum) that addresses your reasons for transferring and the objectives you hope to achieve.

Note: The Common Application essay should be the same for all colleges. Members that wish to review custom essay responses will request them on their Supplement form.

I’ve got two semesters of college under my belt but only 24 credits and am currently enrolled in 12 also. Still my lowest grade is an A- (3.958 gpa) and many of my classes have been upper level.

applied to Smith as a freshman but was waitlisted

SAT 720 writing 720 reading and 560 math

i think that this will actually strengthen your application because it shows that this is the only school that you want to go to. i did the same thing for my spring application, and i made it really specific to the school and i think that only proves how interested you are.

one of my best friends just transferred to smith. she loves it.

Many people write college specific factors in their CA essay. As far as your concern about them thinking it’s you’re only applying to one school, I don’t think that’s true, nor do I think they’d really care.

Where is this coming from? I don’t see it on the CA Transfer application I’ve downloaded, but I know that sometimes the electronic version is slightly different. I’m not sure why the CA would say that essays have to be the same for all colleges, as they talk about making alternate versions on their website and it is commonly done, usually with the purpose of editing essays to suit different colleges.

But that seems like a moot point as Smith asks on their supplement:

While it’s only 100 words, isn’t this enough for you to write enough Smith specifics?

It’s not that you have to submit the same answer to all schools for the common app main essay, but that the question is the same for all schools. It’s possible to make different versions of the the app to send to different schools.

I think specifics are helpful, but don’t overlap with your “why smith” essay.

Excellent thank you all so much

With only one CommonApp account, is it possible to send each school a separate essay, or do I need a unique account for each school?

NEU, you just need one common app account.

Thanks, it has been a while since I used the common app ;)

^You can make ‘alternate’ versions of the CA to send to different schools. Check on the CA subforum, it has been discussed fequently there.
