WRITING: WHY is this correct?!?!

why is this correct???

Their children (originally having had) HAVING experienced the malaise of car sickness one too many times, so the couple decided it was best not to venture into a cramped car for a six-hour journey along uncertain roads.

Okay, I thought that HAVING should have been had. But, apparently, it’s HAVING. WHY?? (the book doesn’t give an explanation, and it sounds so weird. Of course, I shouldnt judge based on the way it sounds.)

There must be a mistake in the book. The sentence should read, “Their children had experienced the malaise of car sickness one too many times, so the couple decided it was best not to venture into a cramped car for a six-hour journey along uncertain roads.”
