Wrong Major?

Um…I just looking at my status page and I realized I chose “Biochemistry” not “biomedical engineering”

I don’t know what I was thinking! I’m not sure why I applied to CALS instead of the school of engineering… >.<

um um advice?

Call USC and change it. However, realize that it is harder to get accepted to Viterbi Engineering than to CLAS. Maybe you applied to CLAS because being accepted is easier there. If you truly want Biomed Engineering, then call USC and change it. It all depends upon what you want to study.

Cant you change your major once you get in anyway?

you can rather easily. I don’t think it matters much. it’s a simple matter to change it during orientation when you register for your classes.

I also ambivalent about mdcissp’s advice. I’m a BME major and I like to think it’s not any harder or easier any other way. I guess it’s all in how you framed your application.

Now that I think about it, are you up for a scholarship? If so, it could make a huge difference.

I agree with mdcissp. Engineering at USC has one of the highest stats of USC and is very competitive. I believe if you meant & switch to Biomed Engineering, you will be accepted or denied into that school but if you don’t make into that, I believe you are still considered for CALS. You can contact the adcom assigned to your HS & get more details. They are pretty helpful.
If you are trying for merit aid, some of it is awarded by the individual programs (tho some of it applies to any USC school or department, like Presidential or Trustee).

I would call to let them know that you’ve made a mistake.

Sorry, I should’ve expanded on what I was saying.

HImom is correct. But I want to add that every award I’m aware of is awarded by the individual schools. I’m not aware of any scholarships granted directly by central admissions (this is of course ignoring the alumni associations scholarship and scholarships from specific departments such as GLBT center and the chicano center)

So for scholarships, it matters what major you are because the applicable school will be deciding your scholarship. (including Presidential and Trustee, although they would follow you should you decide to switch majors once you arrived)

In addition there are specific programs in Viterbi that are easier to get into as an incoming freshmen. to name a few: Merit Research, Engineering Honors, and more that I’m sure I’m forgetting about.

So yeah, probably best you change your major to what you intend to study.

Undecided majors are eligible to receive the Trustee and Presidential Scholarships. The admissions department interviews and awards those who are undeclared. Still, the OP is not undecided, the OP is intending to study in a different area than indicated on his application. He/she should call his admissions rep and ask for advice.

You can change your major at USC. However, you might not be able to change to the major you want because of limited openings (Viterbi, Cinema School, etc.). You can easily change your major within Viterbi Engineering, but transferring from CLAS to Viterbi may be more difficult. It would be easier to transfer from Viterbi to CLAS. These are my thoughts but I don’t work for USC and do not claim to have 100% accurate knowledge of transfer situations.

Hm…Okay. I’ll have my mom call tomorrow. (I would call myself, but the time difference makes things sticky esp since I don’t get home til pretty late after school).
So, I should just call the admissions office?

Have suggested above you look up your admissions counselor for your HS at the usc.edu website & e-mail him/her about this issue. That’s probably the easiest & best way to get answers/info that is relevant to your application. Your GC might have some thoughts as well, but generally the USC admissions counselors for each HS are really helpful.

Hm…how would I find out who my admissions counselor for my high school is…ask my guidance counselor?

Here you go:

Ahh! Thanks, I found the admissions counselor’s info. It’s too late to call right now…but I’ll do it first thing after school tomorrow.

You guys are so helpful :)

You’ll probably do best to just send an e-mail as they are busy visiting schools & with other duties. They are pretty good at responding to e-mails, in our family’s experience.
