Wrong name on w2?

So I don’t think this actually belongs here, but I figured some of the parents might actually know.

I’ve been “selected” for verification and along with my parents stuff, I need to send in my w2. I didn’t make enough to have file taxes, however, I still must send in my w2. The thing is, my name on my w2 is wrong. It has been middle name initial as an “A” and my middle initial is actually a “T”.

I know I have to correct it, but I’m not too sure how exactly to do that. Any insights from parents or anyone can shed some light for me?

It shouldn’t be a problem. Is your SSN on it? That is what I would go by. To be honest, I wouldn’t notice the middle initial.

It probably won’t be a problem, but you can always ask your employer to issue a “Corrected W-2” – only the employer can issue this. The corrected W-2 will show your correct name, as well as the name the original W-2 used. The corrected W-2 does not include all of the financial reporting that was on the original W-2, so you’ll need the original W-2 as well.

Make sure your employer corrects your middle initial in the payroll and HR files so that you won’t have this problem in the future.

Thing is, I no longer work there. And I’m a tad scared of contacting my old employer. I wasn’t fired or anything, it was just awkward between us.

Seriously. It won’t matter. My husband’s W-2 has used his nickname for years. The IRS just cares about the Social Security number.

As long as the social security number is correct, I would not be so concerned. Just send it in as is. If you feel compelled to have it corrected, then do so but it isn’t necessary at this point to be verified.
