China is an authoritarian dictatorship, with a history of forced infanticide and forced abortion to achieve the one child policy. They will first try “encouragement”, then they will ban abortion, then they will regulate and eventually ban contraceptives, all to achieve a stable rate of population growth. Theyre already trying to push women back into the role of broodmare. China will do whatever it takes, and do it by regulating and controlling the bodies of women.
Theyve already made it extremely difficult to get sterilized, and made it more difficult to get an abortion. And whereas the government neighborhood spies used to track womens periods, now women are receiving municipal text messages encouraging them to have more children! So far, no free daycare and child allowances, though.
Is it possible that China could go the way of Japan? Since it’s essentially a dictatorship authoritarian society, seems to me that it is even more likely.
Why is this the fault of the women? Seems like if men (who have the power) could go a long way toward resolving this if they would be fairer to the women (including Moms) in the workplace and in the legal system, pick up the ball more on the work involved in running a home and stop beating up on women.
Everything is the fault of women in some societies (and even among some groups within societies that are less patriarchal).
Interesting how the pendulum swings. A few decades ago there was great pressure on families to NOT have more than one child.
DECADES? The one child policy was expanded to allow two children only in 2016, less than 8 years ago. In May '21, it was expanded to three children, and only two months after that, all restrictions on the number of children permitted were removed.
Really poor planning on the part of the Chinese “communist” party, but certainly par for the course for them. On the other hand, overall and rapid population reduction of the planet is one of the best things we can do to fight global warming.
My decades ago comment was about the one child policy started around 1980
