WUSTL/Emory/NU.. & Penn/Brown

Here’s my case:

I’m an international student not requiring any aid. Not sure about my major, but it’ll definitely not be something close to the hard sciences like engineering. I’m leaning towards Communications, Education, Economics, International Studies… you know, those types.

Accepted:
I’m accepted to 6 schools, but now deciding between WUSTL and Emory… It’ll most likely be WUSTL, because I like their campus and students, and my parents and I think that it’s slightly more prestigious than Emory… Are we right?

However, I’m planning to get into MBA so I’m thinking whether Emory will help me more with that… Also, as a non-med student I’m worried about WUSTL’s much too well-known medical programs. I mean, is a WUSTL degree still as valuable if it’s not a pre-med/biomed engineer/etc degree?

Waitlisted:
NU, Penn, Brown

My plan:
If Penn OR Brown finally accepts me, I’ll pick it over WUSTL and NU. The choice will be easy.
If BOTH Penn and Brown accepts me (which is unlikely lol), I’ll have to make a tough choice, thus I’m asking you guys to help evaluate Penn vs. Brown.
If only NU finally accepts me, I need to decide between WUSTL and NU. Again a very tough choice.

So guys, please help me…

First, I need to decide before May 1, is it WUSTL or Emory for me?
Then, I need to prepare for the waitlist decision in June. Penn or Brown? WUSTL or NU?

I tried to make this complicated situation simpler…haha I’m really confused right now because I don’t know if I should put prestige above everything else. That’s what my parents do. It’s like they don’t seem to care about the “fit” as long as the degree is valued. I value prestige too, but I want to pick one school that is both a good fit and a great institution that will, most importantly, get me a great job in the US after I graduate. Remember that I’m international…so I’m kind of anxious about the ease of getting a job in the US.

You’re definitely overanalyzing this. WUStL is a great school regardless of what one studies there.

In a word, no. They’re both prestigious and would get you pretty much to the same places.

WUSTL would be my choice.

If you get off all your waitlists, then it would be tough between Penn and Brown, but I would opt for Brown, only based on open curriculum. Penn might be better for an international student, because Philly is a diverse international city.

I would go to Northwestern over WUSTL because of Chicago.

That said, you are likely headed to WUSTL unless you get off of NU’s waitlist. I wouldn’t hold my breath about Penn or Brown

Thank you for your inputs!

IBclass06, I agree that WUSTL is a great school no matter what the major is! But my parents seem to have this concern more than I do. - -" They’re now actually urging me to take biomedical engineering because that’s WUSTL’s best program (from our research), not to mention a career with a very bright future. But of course I won’t let anyone guide my path if that’s not what I truly want. :)

vociferous: I heard that Philly is very dangerous…albeit a diverse city.
It seems that I’ll get better grades at Brown because of their pass/fail system and loose requirements… I’m not sure.

I’m a bit worried about fitting in at Northwestern. Students seem to segregate according to race, and there are many sorority-type girls… I understand that this happens in a lot of schools, and it’ll depend on oneself to break the barriers, but still, the less the better.

So does anyone know about racial segregation at NU and WUSTL?

I wish I could visit campus.

Well, I’m having a similar problem. I am also an international student and I am deciding between wustl and gtown. (Waitlisted by UChicago, Penn, and NU)
gtown seems more prestigious but wustl seems academically better.

God, it is so hard to pick a school when you do not intend to major the school’s strongest field.
I mean, I will major in econ or mathematics, and both are not exactly wash u or gtown’s strongest fields. Anyway, it is totally irrelevant to your case.

I think compared to emory, wustl would be a better choice.
Even though emory is a great school, I believe that wash u is slightly more prestigious, has better professors and students.
Good location, weather, and facilities.
(And though I know it may look stupid, I cannot really ignore USNWR ranking)

Also, II heard from my seniors that it is extremely hard to get a job in U.S when you are not a citizen.
It wouldn’t be impossible but still extremely hard.
But I don’t think that getting a job really depends on which school you go to.
More important thing is getting a good GPA and great resume.
