******WUSTL Merit Scholarships Class of 2020******

I totally agree TytoAlba that if you do not get the very limited scholarships go elsewhere

for those who got the Langsdorf would you mind posting your stats so we can better understand the process and thank you in advance

D applied for Moog and one another (I do not remember), but did not get either. So, WASU is now out of option for us, as she has other school(s) with generous scholarships to consider. Her stats are posted in Chance me, if anyone is curious.

Does anyone know how WashU fares in terms of financial aid? same boat as @maldivesswim, can’t afford the school without assistance

how many finalists are there for each scholarship? does anyone know?

I know not popular to say this but you really can’t count on merit aid for schools like Wash university (top tier ranked schoos. top 20 schools in us rankings). In fact I think wash univ.is an outlier in having any merit aid amongst the top 20 ranked schools and I believe that it is far and few between(prob. less than 5percent of applicants getting these merit awards) Most highly selective, top ranked schools, give money in the form of 100 percent of demonstrated financial need in the form of loans/ not grants but are not throwing out merit aid. I too am disappointed with a S who had great stats (above 2300, lots of APs, great extrac, 2 SAT subject tests above 750) and didn’t get selected but realize that his STATS are what most selected students in the ED and RD rounds have who are not getting merit aid. Those posting that they got merit aid/scholarships(FIN AID) from other schools I bet are from great /awesome schools but not top 20 ranked schools. You have to go much lower in the rankings to count on merit aid.

Oops meant to say those posting they got merit aid/scholarships(NOT FINANCIAL AID) FROM other schools …
also people posting about questions about how Wash univ is with FA, should be able to determine this with Net price calculators on their website. I think they are probably pretty accurate with knowing what your FA package will be including expected parent contribution.

emory was the only other top ranked school that I could see also had substantial merit aid/scholarships but again far and few between (less than 5 percent of applicants). schools like emory and wash univ don’t have to entice great students to come to their school and reserve most of their money for accepted students with demonstrated financial need. again I too am very disappointed but really wasn’t counting on it.
I know my post won’t be popular but sometimes the truth is not popular!

oops so many corrections-I meant to say in my earlier post that most top tiered schools/highly selective schools give FA in the form of GRANTS/NOT LOANS.

Do anyone have any information about the Stamps Foundation Scholarship ? I just want to know the qualifications to receive this scholarship.

cut and paste from wash univ scholarship page. doesn’t say when awardees are notified of Stamps.

Stamps Leadership Scholarship

The prestigious Penelope W. and E. Roe Stamps IV Leadership Scholarship awards the full cost of undergraduate attendance to outstanding freshmen at Washington University.

Through a generous commitment from the Stamps Family Charitable Foundation and additional support matched by Washington University, an average of five Stamps Scholars a year will receive paid tuition, fees, room, board, books and supplies. The merit-based scholarship is renewable through four years, as long as academic, extracurricular and civic performance remains high.

This unique program also includes an enrichment fund of $10,000 per student to be used over four years to pay for outside-of-the-classroom educational experiences such as study abroad, research or unpaid internships.

The Stamps Leadership Scholarship program rewards exceptional students who exemplify leadership, perseverance, scholarship, service and innovation. All applicants to Washington University will be considered for this scholarship; no additional Stamps Leadership Scholarship application is required.

There are other top 20 schools that give merit scholarships - Vanderbilt, Notre Dame and Duke come to mind. Even UChicago has Stamps scholarships. But @momof2eagles is right that less than 1-2% of admitted students at these schools are awarded merit scholarships, and given how competitive it is just to get in to these schools to begin with, winning a merit scholarship at a school like WashU is a little like hitting the lottery. So big congrats to those reporting a good result! As for Stamps at WashU, it’s possible they haven’t called the nominees for these scholarships, but I would assume they have been contacted along with all of the other scholarship finalists/awardees.

Congrats again to all who received these highly selective scholarships. Again, I think if you are counting on any/substantial merit based aid , you need to look/apply to colleges much further down in the rankings than a school like Wash univ. 1-2 percent are not great odds to depend on these merit based scholarships at highly selective schools mentioned by @4X529s and Emory and wash univ. My S is a National Merit scholar, and even these merit based scholarships are neglible for National Merit students at the top/selective schools(around 1,000 dollars). Schools giving free rides/ half rides are out there but to be assured of these kind of scholarships you need to look at schoosl lower in rankings.

I think you missed the point. No one is arguing schools with high ranks give out little to no merit aid. We all know that. The point is even though we can well afford to pay the entire cost, we don’t see the value in paying $60,000 a year to go to WashU when we can pay $25k or less to attend another school we like as much. Ranking is not the be all end all of our decision. There is more to it than that.

@TytoAlba I did not miss the pt!. The pt is not to count on these merit scholarships at top ranked schools that give out scholarships to less than 5 percent of applicants. If you don’t see the value of a full price private school as you said in your post above, and like as much schools that are far less to attend, than why did you apply if you knew ahead of time you were not eligible for FA as you said in your post? If you are accepted to Wash Univ and have no intention of paying the full value knowing you were not eligible for FA than why did you apply? I agree with you that ranking is not the most important thing. I never said that . All I did was acknowledge the FACTS, that for merit aid (not FA), schools with higher rankings/more selective, you can’t count on getting one of these scholarships and should factor that decision making in the application process.

It sounds like you already have great choices. Congrats!

It’s rather obvious one applies with hopes to get a scholarship. If you don’t apply for one, you cannot be accepted for one. Everyone knows going in the odds. It’s free to apply. Why not?

I think it’s ok to apply to schools like Wash U where the chances of getting merit aid is very low and knowing you don’t quality for need-based aid even if there are schools out there that are cheaper and will work just as well according to the criteria of the student and parent. If you don’t apply at the school and for the scholarhip, then how will you know if you could have gotten it? It’s like Wayne Gretzky said, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”

As an example, I think that most students who apply to HYPS have as much a chance at getting in to those schools as getting a merit scholarship to Wash U. Yet, tens of thousands of hopeful kids apply to those schools. Why? Because they won’t know if they would have gotten in to those schools if they didn’t apply. If you get in, then awesome! If you don’t, well that’s ok because those schools turn down 35+ ACTs and 2300+ SATs all the time. At least the kid tried.

Same with Wash U. A kid loves the school. The kid would go there in a heartbeat if tuition (or half of it) was free. Why not apply for the scholarhip and see?

Hello, I am new to this forum and have few questions.

  1. Does anyone know that how many Rodriguez scholarship finalists are selected for the interview?
  2. Out of the finalists, how many students can get the full-tuition scholarships and how many students can get the partial-tuition scholarships?
  3. Are all the finalists will get either full-tuition scholarships or partial-tuition scholarships for sure? Is it possible that someone in the finalists may not get any scholarships?

Thanks for any information!

I would echo the sentiment that it is an unusual opportunity to have a school of WashU’s caliber offer merit aid. Just by the shear numbers, it is going to be incredibly competitive to get merit aid. If they offer 5 or 10 scholarships in a category, many amazing students (who likely have many other choices) won’t be selected.

From my own standpoint of visiting WashU, every single employee we met at the school was exceedingly friendly, and the facilities were beautiful. They created a personalized agenda and arranged a meeting with a professor. Obviously no school is perfect, and everyone has different criteria, but they are clearly doing many things right.

My 2 cents.

I agree @inn0v8r , to those of you who got scholarships: you’re at another level! Regarding the facilities and people at WashU, you couldn’t have been more right! Definitely worth more than 2 cents lol :).

Are you saying that some students in the scholarship finalists may not get any scholarships after the interview a the campus? Thanks.
