WUSTL VS. COMMONWEALTH COLLEGE (UMass)

I cannot decide between full tuition WUSTL or full-tuition Commonwealth College (UMass Honors Program). I can’t justify paying more than $120,000 for the next four years for WUSTL compared to UMass Honors. Is WUSTL’s education, extracurricular opportunities, and graduate opportunities worth $120,000 more than what is offered from the Commonwealth at UMass?

My one perk at UMass is that I was invited to UMass Chancellor’s Scholar Program. UMass is starting this program for the first time ever next year, and it is suppose to give students an edge in preparing for the top college and post-graduate scholarships in the world. Supposedly, only 100 students of the over 4,000 students who were accepted into the Commonwealth College were invited to this program.

I know WUSTL is a really great school but the question is: Is it better in the long run to, most likely, be middle of the pack at WUSTL, or to really stand out at UMass Honors College?

Thanks!

Also, I want to major in Biochemisty. UMass offers BDIC (Bachelor’s Degree with Individual Concentration) which is one of their highest ranked departments that would allow me to major in Biochemistry and Business Management by focusing at the College of Natural Sciences and taking classes at the Isenberg School of Management as well.

On the other hand, WUSTL offers a lot of flexibility in terms of taking courses across their colleges. Also, their medical school is one of the top in the nation, and I could directly work with professors at the medical school as an undergraduate.

In terms of applying to medical school, do graduate schools view a WUSTL education as significantly better than a UMass Honors College education?

WUSTL is a great school, and many pay over 200K to attend, but no one can decide if it is worth it for YOU. It depends entirely on your family’s finances.

If the colleges were the same price, where would you go?

How will you be $120,000 more in debt?
For 4 years, if you have full tuition, wouldn’t the most you would pay is $80,000 ($at most 20,000 per year?)

By full tuition, I meant that I have to pay for everything. That might have been confusing

I suggest you read the premed section within WUSTL 2014 since it has a lot of info in there.
Yeah, I interpreted the wrong way, haha, since so many people on this forum say full tuition meaning they got the scholarship. :stuck_out_tongue:
As for comparing premed programs, WashU has a really strong and tough program with very strong premed advising. However, if you think going into debt $120,000 is a major factor, you also have a very good offer at UMass, so I can definitely see your dilemma. WashU’s premed program the intro chem, especially orgo, are weedout classes so a lot of premeds actually drop out along the way. If you think you might only be in the middle of the pack at WashU and you believe that you can stand out in that honours program, then I think UMass is a better option for you.
