Some community members call my daughters inner city high school an example of apartheid, apparently because teachers have high expectations, unlike a few other schools where students are rewarded for performing at a low level.
Parents don’t want their kids to work so hard, so they may discourage them from taking AP and even honors courses.
The teachers have more confidence in their students than that, but when the parents don’t see the value in increased expectations, its hard for the kids to see a path that includes continuing their education after high school.
When students don’t see a future, they may make choices that results in the worst case scenario.
Its really tragic.</p>
