I am currently an ambitous nigerian american highschool student, and I was wondering about XULA’s premed program.to help me find anything I can find about people’s premed experience at XULA. I also want to clarify I just graduated my sophmore year at highschool, but I am very ambitous got tons of clinical and nonclinical volunteering stuff lined up, and I already got a 1450/1600 on my SAT though I am trying to increase my SAT to 1500 .
So here are my questions?
Did XULA gave premeds attending there tons of support for premed? (Like summer internships, guidance meetings, linking up medical admission people to advertise there school to us)
I also was reading about how Xula got these early assurance programs to all these medical schools. How difficult is it to get into those early assurance programs?
Is there grade deflation or grade inflation at Xula? If you are putting in hard work, is it easy to get A’s at the science classes?
Kinda related to number 2. Does Xula got any good reputation with any medschools that makes it easier to get accepted to a certain med schol.
Is there anything else that Xula does that makes there premed experience great?
Any information about Xula premed I would really appreciate as It can help me start preparing to be the best premed I can be.
I did not attend XULA nor do I work there, so I can’t speak to what actually goes on on the campus. But this column does speak to what I’ve heard about before…how Xavier puts a lot of focus on supporting its students (especially its STEM students) in the early years to make sure they have the tools necessary to succeed.
Additionally, Xavier is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. This interview with the current president talks about what kind of budget cuts it’s received to its research money by the current administration (so far, none) and has a passing reference to how undergraduate research has always been emphasized at the school.
I don’t know all of the elements that XULA uses to help its students succeed, but I think that its record speaks for itself. It takes students who often don’t have the academic preparation to be accepted to a low admission college and prepares them well and gets them on the path to a successful career in medicine.
Most early assurance programs are challenging admits, but that is something I would reach out to XULA for. I strongly suspect that they will be happy to answer questions from a prospective student, particularly one as strong as you.
I’m also going to tag @fiftyfifty1 who may know more.
A caveat: American med schools (both pathways: MD and DO) don’t accept internationals.
I see you’re a Nigerian citizen, so without US citizenship med schools will be closed to you.
AFAIK you can still apply to Physician Associate, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Nursing… graduate programs.
Another part of the equation for any international is budget: if your parents have $250,000 for 4 years of education and $200k for graduate school your situation is quite different from one where you need 50+k in financial aid each year.
My interpretation of the OP’s statement was along the lines of Irish-American or African-American and that the OP is an American citizen, rather than a Nigerian who is attending high school in the U.S. But that is definitely something that we would need @KingsleyDaKing to clarify, as citizenship definitely changes the implications of the landscape.
Good point - I indeed read this as “Nigerian student at an American High School” but “Nigerian-American” ie., “US citizen with Nigerian parents/relatives” would make more sense wrt Med School queries. I hope OP will indeed specify.
XULA does an amazing job of preparing students for medical school. Tons of premed support. Super strong alumni network. XULA alumni love their college and are super loyal. XULA has a great reputation with medical schools all across the country and in addition, they are opening their OWN medical school. Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine | Xavier University of Louisiana
Not a lot, and what info I do know is more than 20 years old. The doctor I know who was offered the early assurance option at XULA was top of her class . She ended up deciding to apply to med schools other than the assured location, and ended up getting multiple acceptances.
Adding one more vote for “ have heard excellent things about their support and preparation of their students for medical and other health science occupation/programs”
