Xxx school would be lucky to have you

Do interviewers tell every student they interview that the school would be lucky to have them or is this just specific to students they actually like?

From stories I have heard, interviewers are likely to tell any student the university is lucky to have them. Although, I could be wrong, but not completely.

Different colleges do interviews differently, but I’d be surprised if any college instructs interviewers to say that. Assuming the interviewer is choosing to say it on his/her own, then the interviewer also decides who he/she says it to. I am an interviewer and have never said “{school name} would be lucky to have you” or similar. I make it a point to not say anything that implies admission is likely or unlikely.

Oh okay!

I’ve had 4 interviews and although my MIT interview went really well, she didn’t say anything like that. My Northwestern interview was pretty mediocre and she didn’t say anything like that either. I had an interview with an AO at Bard College at Simon’s Rock and she also said something along the lines of you’re very talented and we’d be lucky to have you but that doesn’t really matter to me because I don’t think I’d be attending Simon’s Rock.
But my Dartmouth interview went so well omg! He was a very energetic and extroverted guy and that’s why he matched my vibe, unlike my other interviewers who were pretty calm and reserved. Apparently he’d been to Bangalore a while ago (that’s where I live) and even before our interview, we had a pretty long conversation via email.
At the end of the interview, he told me that I was one of the most talented and accomplished students he has interviewed and that he hasn’t met any other student with an educational background like mine. He also told me that Dartmouth would be very lucky to have me and he told me to keep him updated on where else I get in (he asked me about where I applied and if I heard back from any of them). He also told me that he had 2 sons who just finished the college application process and that he’d be willing to help me out if I have any doubts or needed any other assistance!
I mean even if I don’t get in (it’s now my top choice!), I’ll take solace in the fact that I had an amazing interview and honestly, I don’t know why it was that great but I don’t think I’ll ever forget the interview!

I would guess it’s very specific to an interviewer whether they would say something like that, and then maybe dependent on the student.

I wouldn’t read too much into it in terms of admissions chances. I’ve had great interviews and conversations with people that I just knew we weren’t going to hire.

Yeah! Moreover, I know that interviews don’t play that big of a role in the admission process.

Thought interviews are supposed to be neutral? Maybe he was taken by you and you struck a cord with him. Heh, take the compliment… Lol… Might not make a difference but it’s always nice when someone acknowledges you.
