yahoo rocketmail?

So son (rising HS senior) has agreed that he should have a bland email address for college applications. His current email address is not offensive or inappropriate but it is a little odd and includes an “unconvential” (i.e., incorrect) spelling of a word. So he agreed to something like JohnSmith@emailprovider.com. His name is not really John Smith but it is common enough that it (and variations, like initials) is not available at the two places we are familiar with, aol and gmail. When I tried yahoo mail, though, it suggested hisname@rocketmail.com. Is anyone familiar with this email address provider? Of course, I don’t want him to use an unreliable email address for his college applications!

I suggest using gmail which is very reliable. Can you add a middle initial to his name or a number after it?

I’d take the rocketmail.com name. He gets the name he wants and the service will be provided by Yahoo, just as if he got a JohnSmith@yahoo.com address.

Incidentally, RocketMail was a free email provider that was bought by Yahoo. Yahoo mail IS the old RocketMail.

I cross-posted with SamK, and I agree with what he says. Rocketmail was acquired by Yahoo back in the ’90s, but the brand was just reinvigorated recently. According to Wikipedia, Yahoo Mail was built upon the Rocketmail structure. Check out the wiki article. Supposedly the rocketmail address was very techno-chic! I imagine Rocketmail will be the same as Yahoo in reliability.

By the way, I agree that this is a great thing to do. I can’t tell you how helpful it has been to have an e-mail account dedicated to the college hunt, and all the rest of it! Because my daughter checks this e-mail account only over the summertime, I check it the rest of the year. That way, nothing is missed. In addition to the college hunt, D uses it for FAFSA (annually) and Profile, scholarship competitions, the Common App, summer jobs, internships, airline flights back and forth, her university’s billing system (for me to pay!), a career fair, etc. Very very handy!

rocketmail has been around for a while, although i wasn’t aware that they’ve been bought by yahoo.

Personally, i like gmail the best. i also don’t get as much junk in gmail.

I’m a gmail fan–and am a big fan of google calendar! I can calendar different activities in different colors–loads of fun.

But gmail can also mark perfectly good email as junk. I created a gmail account for myself, sent an email to my Ds who already had gmail accounts, and my email went to their junk mail. And this is from a fellow gmail account rather than some weird domain. They had to mark me as 'acceptable (haha) in order to receive email from me.

Another one to try if you want is hotmail.

I LOVE Google Calendar!

I use first letter of my first name, my last name and a number for my Comcast account. My friends can reach my cell phone using my pob hotmail account.
