Yale- Accepted People

Post your info.

Im a freshman and I want to go Yale or Harvard.

I go to the best public high school in Illinois as ranked by News Week and 24th in the nation.

All my classes are honors besides PE. Classes include: Survey Lit; Geometry(tested out of Algbra 1 without credit); World Studies; Physics(We take it freshman year); Chinese(plan to take 4 years); and Computer Science.

I will be taking AP US history next year. I’ve been told I am an excellent writer; I have a blog, have won some contests and actaully really like to write.

Extra Curriculars:

Write for the school paper. Currently a writer, next year hopefully I will be an editor and then senior year probably Editor in Chief. I also will be applying to write for other student publicationsthis one called the MASH which is run by the Chicago Tribune and written by students Hopefully I will have written for many many different publications.

Jamaah Club- Im Muslim and this is basically the Muslim Club and we had elections and I ran for PR (Public Relations) and won. That is pretty impressive as a freshman. Hopefully by senior year I will be president.

Math Club- Since right now I am in Journalism, I cant take this commitement very seriously (they occur simultaneously) but next year I will take journalism as a club so i wont be required to be there. I am pretty good at Math and hopefully I will win some contest/awards by senior year.

Desi Club-its a joke as we never meet but whenever we do I do attend.

Boyscouts- I will definetly be a Eagle scout by Junior Year

Sunday School- I will have graduated from my Sunday school and have taught for 2 years when applying to colleges.

Summers:

This summer I am applying to this Freedom Fellowship thing where they teach you leadership skills and how to fight injustice. They teach you things like organizing community events, forums and how to organize a campaign/fundraiser. You also get paid for it and its pretty selective, most likley I will get in. If I dont, I have already been accepted to this program called “University of Chicago Collegiate Scholars” which is like a 3 year commitment with U of C and yea they accept less than 10% of the application pool. But yea Id rather do three different things over my summers.

Sophmore summer- I want to go and study at either Oxford or Cambridge with a full financial scholarship. Dont know my chances for this yet but hopefully itll work out or else Ill find something else productive to do.

Junior summer- I want to take a college Bridge class for credit.

So Yea I am really interested in social science and plan to take as many AP’s as I can in that field.

Here is my plan:

Subject Freshman Year Sophomore Year Junior Year Senior Year

ENGLISH Survey of Literature American Literature British Literature AP Literature

MATH Geometry Trigonometry Calculus AP Stats

SOCIAL S. World Studies AP US History AP Gov (undecided)

SCIENCE Physics Chemistry Biology (undecided)

LANGUAGE Chinese 1 Chinese 2 Chinese 3 AP Chinese

ELECTIVE Computer Science Beginning Band (undecided)

Other PE 1 PE 2 Latin 1 Latin 2

Afterschool JOURNALISM- One year class, 3 years Club.

Well anyways, the bad part: i screwed up a bit and got 2 B’s first semester of this year(freshman year) so my

GPA unweighted is 3.75
weighted is 4.625

Ive taken the ACT twice and SAT once, didnt do well but I took it in 5/6/7 grade. taking it again this year hopefully i have improved(it doesn’t count or anything)

I have a really good relationship with my counselor and yea people think highly of me. I think I’m a well mannered boy :D.

In terms of sports, Im on the tennis team but yea I suck right now, first time playing. i wanna be varsity by end of senior year; thats the plan.

I come from a pretty low-income family and taking loans is unacceptable Islamically(interest is forbidden) so I must go to w.e university on a full/close to full scholarship. I am also South Asian.

Back to writing. Everyone has their thing, some people are math geniuses, others are science geniuses, some are music, others are crazy at sports. For me its writing. I have a blog if anyone wants to check it out:

themuslimkid.blogspot.com

and I am working on a novel. I have told myself I am very serious about this and I will write it and get it published before senior year.

So yes. I must know, what do you guys think!? I think I am pretty qualified at this rate but really it kills me to see some really qualified people get rejected. and for those who have gotten accepted would you mind writing your info?

PS. I want to be a lawyer and then a politician. :D. I am pretty ambitious person and yea most people would classify me as a practicing Muslim, (not like Osama Bin Laden) lol.

Hey, I’m a writer too! I just got into 2013! If you really love it, I’d suggest trying to find ways to get recognized for it; it’s not like math or science, where you have stuff that’s really obvious like Intel or USAMO, you really have to search the competitions out. Try the Davidson Fellowship or the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Try and get your newspaper nominated for awards too, that’ll help a lot.

Really, though, you should take a few deep breaths and have fun!

To be honest I got accepted and I did not even think of applying to Yale until last year when a teacher encouraged me to apply to top schools. IMO the MOST important thing is to do something FOR you and not for a college. If you look up my stats from the decisions thread you will see I devoted alot of time to science research. That was something that I had been involved with since 7th grade and not for yale, but I think it helped my app alot.

Find something like that, something that you would do without regard to college. Because in all honesty the acceptance rate was like 7% this year, when you apply it might be like 3% so you probably will not get in. But if you go through high school doing something that YOU care about you will have no regrets at all. And that is so much more important than where you go to college.

Sigh… I hope the grandeur and wonders of the admissions game doesn’t wear off for you like it did for me. Look at old results thread for stats…

It’s nice to see familiar faces in CC that got into Yale too… Hopefully, we can meet RL in New Haven. :)

see that’s the thing. i really do enjoy doing ALL Those things.

I manage my time wisely and am able to get things done yet I enjoy life. I have no regrets.
Like I said, i have a sincere interest in Social sciences thus I want to take lots of social science classes, there always interesting. I like tennis just suck at it so im going to try and play for four years and one day ill become really good :D.

I love writing and that is one of the main things I pursue. I really do act out of my interest whether it is for my future or if it is because I do like it. Usually it is both.

People dont comment much. Actually this forum is better than others.

Southeasttitan I am SO glad you got accepted I LOVED your essays and wanted you to get in.

Just chill and do what you like and as long as you really enjoy it it wont be a problem to demonstrate focus and commitment along withintellectual vitality to those colleges that appreciate the skills which you have to offer which at this point seem well on their way.

college admissions are random as hell. just apply and see what happens

I’m the mother of a Yale SCEA accepted son this year (2013). You sound like you are very much on the right track. Your coursework looks fine. Writing is your passion so concentrate on that - you don’t really need sports or music if writing is your dream. Develop your own ECs related to writing - you have your blog and your novel (great selling points) - how about starting a writing group at your school, or a newsletter for Muslim kids, or something like that. What about journalism or writing at Medill at N’western during a summer instead of overseas? Adcoms like to see initiative taken in order to pursue a passion, not just doing the expected things (as long as you of course take the most academically challenging load you can at your high school). My son had neither sports or music or arts, but he had a passion - politics - and did everything he could at the most advanced level he could to pursue that passion. So don’t clutter your resume with the unnecessary - adcoms want to see your passion jump out at them when they read your app. Oh, and one other thing that I learned here on CC: love thy safety!! Good luck!

I suggest you go to Yale. Harvard is Harvard, but you need a life

I think you should consider staying here for the summer. Going out of the country suggests you have money, and you are a liar. It would also show the school you are willing to contribute to the country, not leave.

How is biomedical engineering at Yale? S is leaning towards Yale but also wants to check one other schools student days too. Can any current student in the program comment? I saw some article in Yalenews that wasn’t very comforting about lack of classes for Bioengineering students. Is that true?

You’re a freshman? Forget about the college process! Challenge yourself with the hardest classes, get the best grades possible, and do stuff you love! But you already knew that. Wipe CC from your brain for the sake of sanity. I don’t mean to be disparaging toward your curiosity about colleges, but replace that for now with bitter infighting with your friends and awkward relationships with the opposite sex.

Are you saying going to study abroad for a summer is bad?

I was planning on going by a scholarship…
