Yale Admissions & Sexist Email Problem

Help me. My sister is a freshman at Yale and her closest friend is one of the girls who was mentioned in that email that was sent out rating how the freshman girls looked. She’s not beautiful and she had really bad things said about her. The girl is now thinking about leaving Yale and my parents who are good friends of her parents are really mad. Here’s my problem. Both my parents went to Yale, my sisters there and I want to go to but now my parents are so mad that they might not even let me apply. They think that Yales really changed and that they shouldn’t be letting in students who would do this kind of thing. They’ll probably get over it but idk. My sisters pretty mad too and says that Yale isn’t even trying to catch who did this even when most of the students know. The newspaper did a story about it and says that Yale has given up trying to find out who did it and just wants to ignore it hoping people will forget. My parents aren’t forgetting. Help me givve them stories about how this never happens at Yale and is really rare. This is just a one time thing isn’t it? I’m really worried. My sister used to be on this website and got a lot of good answers to questions so I’m hoping it will be the same for me.

Ladies and gentlemen…Our best and our brightest!

Notice the number of posts the OP has to his/her credit.

This kind of behavior is nothing new, it’s just that the delivery system is different. When I was an undergrad at Princeton (30+ years ago), during freshman week if women walked across a certain quad, guys in one of the upper floors of the dorm overlooking the quad would hold up numbers from 1-10 in the window. No university is exempt from boorish behavior on the part of its students, but now these things can unfortunately live on in cyberspace. While it would be nice to think that 30 years later these sorts of attitudes no longer exist in the hallowed Ivy halls, well…welcome to the real world.

wjb, what in the world are you talking about?

Kei

^^The OP is brand new to CC. Sometimes posters register simply to begin inflammatory threads and create a little mischief.

In the event the OP is sincere, I echo what booklady said: Misogynistic jerks like those who wrote and circulated the “Scouting Report” attend every college in America. Yale is no exception.

Does anyone know why “Admissions” is in the title of this post? It doesn’t occur the text and it doesn’t occur in either article.

Colleges are extremely careful when it comes to such things, and it seems to me that Yale has tried to find out who sent the email. Obviously, and almost certainly for very good reasons, many people are not satisfied with the fact that no action has been taken against the author(s), but this sort of thing has to be handled with care–the possibility of erroneous “identification” is a serious concern.

Finally, although the fact that people who would do such a thing are on virtually every college campus–and have been for years–is of little comfort, it does mean that there is hardly any alternatives to Yale where it couldn’t happen.

“Yale Admissions Sexist Email Problem”

Nope.

Sorry I didn’t mean to cause trouble and I am sincere. I just want to get advice on what to say to my parents and I don’t want this to keep me from going to Yale. That’s what I meant by admissions in the title. I meant my chances and if my parents will let me go. Also I better change my screen name what I meant was Me At Yale but it looks bad. Sorry. I’ll give them booklady’s comments. They hate Princeton anyway but I’m also hoping you guys can tell me that this is really rare. Has anything like that happened before at Yale?

You can tell them that I have a daughter who’s a senior at Yale, and am absolutely delighted she’s there. (And Princeton’s pretty great, too, despite what they may think. ;))

Moderator Note: Thread title modified for clarification.

To answer your question about whether anything like this has happened before at Yale, here are a few incidents that have occurred in the past few years:

The administration’s response to such incidents has been less than satisfactory.

However, I wouldn’t let this stop you from applying to Yale. The majority of people here are outraged that this email was distributed. No matter where you go to school, you will find misogynists, racists, and homophobes. Yale is not immune just because it is Yale. What is most important is how the institution and the student body respond.

If you’ve visited Yale (or as I’m sure your sister would tell you), most students are incredibly kind and welcoming. Don’t let a few jerks ruin your impression of the school as a whole.

The administration is working closely with the Yale ITS in an effort to track down those responsible for the e-mail in question. Yale holds a zero tolerance policy for sexual harassment, and just because the investigation has stalled on the network aspect does not mean the investigation will stop.
