Yale alumnus taking questions

Ask away…

Where has Yale gotten you in life?

Sort of a broad question… Yale has “gotten me” a load of opportunities for learning, career advancement, and fun. It has also gotten me a set of lifelong friends…

That’s great.

Have you ever gotten any connections or VIP positions to cool things, like movie premieres and whatnot?

People always say that a Yale diploma can open a lot of doors after graduation, and that being a Yalie will always give you an edge. How true is this based on your personal experience and on that of other Yalies you know?

Also, is there anything you totally disliked about the school???

Last one - if you had the chance would you attend another college for your undergrad degree???

Thanks:)

Mariela: Chestito za Yale. Az sushto bih izbrala nego;)

YaleSocietyMember: I know it might sound like a dumb question, but is Yale a good place to study Creative Writing and Journalism? Yes, i know the humanities are pretty big at Yale, but, as these two don’t even exist as majors, I was wondering how comprehensive/competitive the classes are and if good opportunities for wannabe writers like myself exist. Is there anything comparable to, say, Princeton’s program in CW?

What job offers did you receive right after graduation? What field are you in now and are you satisfied with your salary?

mariela- There is a huge, very loyal Yale alum network that can and will help you out.

Things I didn’t like about the school? Social scene could get a bit repetitive, financial aid traditionally hasn’t matched up to Harvard and Princeton

Would have gone anywhere else? No, couldn’t imagine it.

jhudora- there is a very good writing program within the English department if I remember correctly. I also know a lot of people go into journalism after doing journalism ECs.

bananas- I am working in investment banking now (I’m actually still at the office at 12:15 AM). I had this offer going into senior year (I interned at my firm) and I am happy with the salary

is it hard to get into yale. what scores/ec did you have

What did you major in?

Since you’re an investment banker, and I’m interested in that, what’s your salary? How’s the schedule? thanks

jhudora:WOW…I am surprised…you are actually one of the few Bulgarians that did not reproach me for turning down Harvard and going to Yale!

Will you be applying this year?

Mariela: Yes, i will. I spent 3 weeks at the Yale campus this summer…and it just clicked. Now it’s my dream college…for a number of reasons I don’t want to get into.
I don’t see any reason for reproaching you. Both are amazing colleges, but in the end all that matters is which one is better for YOU, not which one is more prestigious, or well-known, or whatever.

Banking pay is 55K or 60K plus bonus. The bonus this year was a 60K median at most banks. Good pay.

Hours suck, I’m still at the office and will be here for another 2-3 hours.

Do you have an MBA? If you don’t, are you planning on getting it?

No, and I the only reason I would get an MBA is to essentially take two years off before switching careers

jhudora:THANKS GOD, a Bulgarian with common sense:)

GOOD LUCK!!!

Thanks, Mariela.
Same to you. I guess I’ll be seeing you around on the boards:)

ia vizh ti
chestito momicheta.

were u in a secret society when u were at yale?

shhhhhh, quiet.
