Yale book award, what is that?

I am sure this topic has been discussed before but my search turns out too many posts with either Yale or BOOK. So I am asking again.

Just got a phone call from DW that DD unexpectedly got a “Yale book award” today at school. Based on my web research, this is an honor extended from the local Yale club. We don’t know any of these people nor were we notified before today for any application process.

Does this mean the local Yale club will put in some good words for DD if she applys? Should DD listed this on her common application? She has earned so many awards that we had a very hard time narrowing down what to list for her resume (school assignment).

Thanks

All of the recipients of the various college book awards are selected by their high schools. The college alumni associations providing the book awards are trying to attract good students (including those who didn’t get the award) to apply to their colleges. The awards are not something that gives anyone an edge to applying to the colleges, though the awards may impress less competitive colleges or local scholarship committees.

definitely goes on her apps! However, she was probably chosen by her high school teachers/counselors …there were probably several “book awards” that day to the juniors and this is certainly another feather in her cap!

In addition to what NSM said, different college book awards state that they are looking specifically for different attributes in students, so those special characteristics are often taken into account when deciding who should win each award. There tend to be more book awards for more local universities. At my high school in MA, awards were from Harvard, MIT, Williams, and other schools in the Northeast.

I see. Many thanks. So the HS actually does the section for the local club.

Yes, I was told there were many other bood awards from schools like Harvard etc. given.

DD got 4 special awards today at a very highly competitive school. This Book award, a civil service award, #1 in local Spanish chapter per National Spanish Exam (awaiting national ranking), and a high GPA, plus several honorable mentions. DS who has a 4.0 GPA only got his name listed on a screen as one of the honorable mention.

Some book awards give the recipient the opportunity to submit applications early or without fees, and some do offer an “in” for some scholarships. For instance, the University of Rochester [Bausch & Lomb Science Award](www.bausch.com/en_US/corporate/corpcomm/general/award_scholarship.aspx) offers the following:

This is a scholarship specific to the U of Rochester, and even if the only students considered for it are recipients of the Bausch & Lomb award there are still a number competing each year, but for the right student it’s a nice plus. If I recall correctly, award recipients are mailed an application for U Rochester over the summer.

Congratulations to your D, laserbrother!

Our HS gives out a Harvard Book, Princeton Book, University of Rochester Soc. Sci Award, Cal Tech Award, Renssalaer Tech Award. Each is sponsored by either an Alumni Association or the school itself with criteria set by the sponsor. My D rec’d the Harvard Book. The local Alum rep offered his assistance in her application process. She ended up waitlisted at Harvard. Renssalaer offers a big scholarship to those selected by the high schools (if they get admitted). I don’t think any of the awards help one get in, except to say that the student was selected over others in their HS class. Obviously, it doesn’t hurt.

DD just told me that in her HS, the Yale book award is always given to the 2nd in the class. With that, I stop questioning her about why she did not get other academic awards.

PS. Thanks for all your replies.
