Yale Campus

How long does it take to walk from one end of campus to the other?

Define ‘campus’. Are you including Science Hill? Science Hill to Pierson College (a dorm) is about 1.2 miles.

I decided that my previous reply was too flip. Missed the edit deadline, tho…

So, that depends on how you define ‘campus’. There’s a core area, stretching North- South from Chapel to Grove and East-West from Temple to Park, which is about 0.4 by 0.4 miles in dimension – although this leaves the following major locations out: Payne Whitney Gym, Science Hill, Ingalls Rink, School of Management, Divinity School, School of Medicine, Student Health, British Art Museum, Peabody Museum. Some of these are not relevant to most undergraduates most of the time, and some are. Kind of hard to predict without knowing more about your interests.

The Yale Campus in general is not fenced off from it’s surrounding urban space, although there is one core area (Old Campus) surrounded by a fence (with gates which are never locked, by the way). Dorm buildings (and their interior courtyards) are locked and accessible only to residents, but that is not true of the campus as a whole.

One possible answer for longest predictable typical undergrad walk (or sprint): Science Hill to Pierson College (a dorm) is about 1.2 miles.

Everyone complains about the walk up to science hill – everyone loves to complain about something right? That was until I worked on summer at Stanford. That’s a HUGE sprawling campus. I didn’t complain about sci hill any longer --plus it helps w/those late night pizza calories!

^You are the coolest Asian parent ever

I was more talking about walking around the Yale campus, you see I have a relatively bad knee problem, so was wondering if walking from class to class, and from my dorms to my class will be a problem for me? If I am taking freshman classes, will I have to walk more than about 15 minutes from one class to the next?

You might, especially if you have classes on Science Hill. But there is also a shuttle bus that goes around campus.

You most likely won’t have to walk more than like 5 mins. Best case scenario - you’re on Old Campus and have to go to SSS for class or maybe Davies auditorium. That’s no more than a 5 minute walk, if that. Actually, even from Silliman and TD, it’s not that far (unless you’re going to 35 Broadway). Worst case scenario is going to Science Hill, which is a 15 min walk or you can wait for the shuttle. I’m sure that when they finally finish fixing that bridge on Prospect, it won’t be a long ride.

I must confess: In some semesters, when choosing my optional courses, I actually factored in the proximity to my front door in the decision to take or not take the class. Gotta love that pure intellectual pursuit on display by Yalies, right? LOL

I lived on Old Campus my Jr and Senior Years and was able to manage several classes in Linsly Chittenden – which I walked through to go to breakfast anyways! For one lecture, I literally woke up 10 minutes before, washed up and scrambled over to LC – completely on time.

What a bum! LOL

^ Haha, that is completely respectable! I try to factor distance, but seeing as most of my classes are up on science hill anyways, seems futile. :(

BTW, sometimes 2 or 3 blocks can seem like REALLY far away, especially with New Haven traffic lights and people you know stopping you. So, factor that in as well.
