im good friends with a yale alumni interviewer’s daughter, and apparently her dad is getting a list of admitted students either tonight or tomorrow morning. finding out through the portal seems like an american right of passage, so i told her not to tell me!!! its crazy to know that its already done, though!

@T26E4 I’d assume that if I go to a large public school that has never gotten a kid into Yale in its 10-year history that my counselor would have no idea about my decision?

Very little communication happens between Yale and guid counselors offices – even of ones that eventually get chosen. The wink, wink, nod, nod I alluded to earlier is DEFINITELY the exception to the rule. So this is nothing to worry about.

@artistgirl97. Unless your friend’s dad is the area Director, he is NOT getting a list of students at all. If he’s only an interviewer, 2 to 3 days after the decisions are announced, he’ll get word in his alumni volunteer portal of the decisions of ONLY the kids he interviewed. FERPA rules don’t allow him to know about other applicants. Even the DIRECTORS don’t get the list until after all the students are informed – not tonight or tomorrow morning. I can 100% vouch for this.

@artistgirl97 That’s so weird. My interviewer told me he wouldn’t know till the after we get our decisions.

Alumni interviewers do not get a list of admitted students, only the results for those students they interviewed. And, its after the fact so we don’t inadvertently spill the beans before the official results come out.

@T26E4 Most definetly. I’ve had some communication with the coach, and she thinks it’s likely I could join the team, but she wants to wait until I have an admissions decision until looking into it further. I’m right on the fence, ability wise, and from what I’ve seen, Yale doesn’t like to take on a ton of new freshmen. However, it sounds like they have plenty of athletes that want to be on the team but not a ton that get accepted.

Running in college, and being part of a team and a competitive atmosphere, is very important to me. It is highly unlikely that I will attend Yale if I don’t make the team.

If I get accepted, my big decision will be between Yale and Michigan State. I’ve grown up being a Spartan, and they are recruiting me to run (not to mention they were national champs this year!) I know being a part of that program would be an incredible experience… They like to take on lots of people with “potential,” espicially those right from Michigan.

I know the experience at the two schools in general would be vastly different, and I am totally undecided about what I want to do… Hence the username… It may end up coming down to financial aid. If for some reason I do not get a huge package from Yale it would be impossible to attend. On the other hand, MSU’s scholarship competition seems to be mostly based on luck (it’s a trivia test, basically), and if they don’t give me a large package while Yale does, I will attend Yale.

@triplehelixva that’s kinda where I’m at too. MSU has a very flexible honors program and I just don’t know if I want to be around all crazy people (like at Yale) or around regular people, too. At Yale, I’d be a just another smart, involved kid, whereas at State I’d be the hot commodity, I’d still be special.

I read Gladwell’s book, David and Goliath, this summer (and highly recommended it!) and definetly see his point. I think I will have a successful life whether or not I choose prestige. And I’m not sure I want to be constantly surrounded by academic snobbery… Not to mention a city… Far away from home…

Does anyone else’s parents not want them to attend Yale?

My dad really wants me to go to UVA, my mom really wants me to “follow my dreams.”

A difficult decision that I hope I have to make.

@ditherer
If I can comment on this, while not an outlandish stereotype — it’s actually not the vibe whatsoever at Yale. Sure, you’re gonna have a few people you’ll roll your eyes each time they open their mouths (got some at your HS, I bet!). But the overwhelming sense at Yale is not of bursting academics but frankly, one of shock and awe – but in a good way.

Let me explain. Everyone who is admitted has got something. This person’s “something” is different than the next person’s and is different than yours. But very quickly, you learn that everyone has got something amazing! Often, jaw dropping amazing! So people who walk around like a strutting peacock with his or her little “something” get quickly humbled. Very quickly, you learn not to boast and brag, cuz what you’re bragging about, that kid next door did as a Sophomore – and is super humble about it. Makes you look kinda silly – thus, an equilibrium quickly hits the freshman class. The need to maintain the top dog mentality (since you were likely the or one of the top scholars at your HS or even your entire city) no longer exists – everyone collectively exhales – and truly starts to enjoy one another. There were academic superstars – but the chill, non-competitive environment just allows you to enjoy them and learn from them as peers and friends.

I thought I was being caalm but my body was just tricking me. All the feels are just rushing into my bdoy rn. I did my math hw and I can’t even bring myself to do my chemistry. I hate this feeling. ~X(

Never posted on here before, but to all of those who hear back tomorrow, GOOD LUCK! You are all amazing people and I love you all. You will succeed wherever you go. Please do not kill yourself over one school!

22 hours and a half left.

My school is doing amazingly with ED acceptances, but other schools in the area are not. Yet again, I can’t even speculate properly. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? (probably nothing).

I feel jittery >.< I know that Yale isn’t the only school in the world but the informational meeting in NOLA made me fall in love with it! I hope I get accepted! I’m terrified though because I come from a very small high school in a very small southern town in Louisiana where most students wind up going to ULL, LSU, ULM, or Southern. There are a few who venture out (like the guy who went to UofChicago) but that’s about the extent of all the venturing the students at my school do! I hope that helps but until tomorrow at 4, I’ll be a mess.

Good luck everybody. Ultimately, some of us will be accepted, most deferred and others rejected. But no matter how it goes, it was a good run, and I’m glad we all tried

@T26E4 thanks for the comment. Obviously, that was not the overwhelming sense I got from Yale, (other schools out east, yes…and I did not and will to apply), Yale really was chill. I think one way of looking at it is that you can ignore the fact that you’re awesome because everyone else is too, and hence, you’re just normal, and there’s no pressure.

Living so far removed from all that, of course I fall into the stereotype traps. Thank for the reminder that “that’s why I chose Yale.” It really was the wonderful, totally NOT snobby, people I met while visiting that made me love the school. :)

I’m new to this thread, and I’m so excited and nervous to get the decision tomorrow! Most of my friends have been deferred or rejected from their EA or ED schools, so I’m hoping I might be the one who gets in early. I know I’ll be checking my phone immediately at 3 after my soccer practice ends. Good luck to everyone!

@jmb121 good luck to you too! I don’t know how you guys can do normal human activity before decisions come out. I’ll probably try to take a nap but end up hyperventilating.

@kylieq3 Hey! I’m from a small rural school in Louisiana, too! I go to the Episcopal School of Acadiana, and am of course applying to Yale SCEA. What school do you go to?
