Yale Class of 2019 SCEA Discussion Thread

I was deferred, but not all hope is lost. Congratulations to all those who got in. And, to those who didn’t, always remember to never give up. In a way, I am glad that I was at least deferred. I have come a long way in my self-improvement campaign and this was a significant step that told me I am moving in the right direction. I’m going to slowly shift my focus to other places, but my heart is still set on Yale for regular decision. Cheers!

Rejected! But I’m not too sad.

I realized a little while ago that I wouldn’t even be happy at Yale.

(I really want the liberal art schools though)

Rejected. I’m jealous of those who got deferred, much less those who were actually accepted. I honestly never expected to get flat out rejected, I was expecting to be deferred, but not even that, huh?

Currently having an existential crisis. Ah well, time to figure out what went wrong, fix all that I can fix, and add a bunch more safeties, 'cause evidently, my standards were higher than my stats.

Congratz to those accepted. You guys did something right (or better) that most of us didn’t.

I got in. Turn up swagger. :)

Congratulations, @ditherer! They should tell everyone to listen for the fight song, though. The same thing happened in my family too: My daughter got in (RD after being deferred), and I still regret years later that we didn’t know to turn up the computer volume.

Congratulations to all that were accepted SCEA to the Class of 2019!!! Now the tables have turned. Yale is going to go full out to try to convince you to accept their offer. Yes, that’s true, they now have to convince you to actually come. Ironic, huh? What an enviable position to be in!!

As an alum (Class of 82) and a parent of a current freshman (who just arrived home last night triumphant after a great first semester), I am here to answer any questions you may have now that your dream of becoming a Yalie is a reality. I am so happy for all of you. Yale is an amazing place. But it is only amazing if it is a fit for you. I hope you applied for the right reasons and not just for the name.

So, if you have any questions at all, please PM me. If the question is for my D about how things are currently, then I will ask her and pass the answer on. She is not on CC but I am sure she will give me the answer which I will then post. If there are any parents on board who want a parent’s perspective, there are a few of us here - IxnayBob, T26E4 and a few others. We are here for you as we know how scary this time can be.

If you have not already done so, go to the accepted students’ Facebook page. You will see your future classmates. Also, there are upperclassmen on there who will answer your questions. I know my D lived on there the first few days.

You can now Christmas shop, enjoy your senior year, have a real case of senioritis (but not too much, your grades cannot drop too much) and generally chill and enjoy this time.

Boola!! Boola!!

@Tperry1982 Thanks for all the help you, @IxnayBob, and @T26E4—and everyone else!—have provided! This is still all sinking in, and I’m looking forward to reading through all the comments on the parents board now!

Congratulations to everyone who got in yesterday, stay optimistic if you were deferred (at one Yale presentation we attended, the admissions rep mentioned that she had been deferred in the early round but was accepted RD!), and know that if you didn’t get in, you’ll get in somewhere else great, and everything will ultimately be fine!

I for deferred :frowning: Is there anything I can do now?

@Crimsonred‌ All you can do is apply to other schools and wait. I applied RD so I have to wait myself. At this point its out of our hands (unless you wanted to take the SAT/ACT again and attempt to improve). Consider yourself lucky. In a way you got 2 chances at being accepted while the RD kids only get 1. Whatever happens is for the best.

ACCEPTED!!! OMG I ONLY CHECKED TODAY DURING CLASS AND I WENT NUTS!!! SOOOOOO EXCITED!!!

Congratulations to all those who got in! And to those who didn’t - I know for a fact you will still end up happy next year at whichever school you choose to attend - don’t be discouraged!! For the deferr-ees, come join our RD discussion thread! <a href=“YALE RD CLASS OF 2019 - Yale University - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/yale-university/1718435-yale-rd-class-of-2019-p1.html</a></p>

Hi guys just wanted to ask if anyone knows whether Yale will get the latest version of my common app essay if i have rewritten parts of it since my EA application? thanks :)

No. The CA application you submitted for SCEA has been downloaded and that is the application they will review in the RD round.

Is there any way I could update my essays? I’m thinking they might’ve been one of the reasons I was deferred in EA

@AnnaLuxe‌ same- you can update your common app essay for sure but it doesn’t get to Yale. Maybe drop them an email saying you’ve had another look at your essay and if they could kindly consider your latest one (i’m going to do that it’s always worth a shot)

Maybe the holidays have me in a Bah Humbuggy frame of mind, but why would getting two bites of the essay apple be fair? Carry it to the extreme, how would this work: “didn’t like my essay, how’s this one? Still not accepted, well then, how’s this one? STILL not accepted, read this one please.” Repeat until successful or AO is exhausted.

IME, it doesn’t work like that once you’re in college (or working). Some courses will include a stage where a draft has comments and “interim grade” provided by the reader, but once an essay is done and handed in, that’s it. Stand behind your work.

It is perfectly acceptable to reconsider your essay for submission to other schools. Maybe AOs have a more charitable view than I do today, but if it were me, my reaction would be negative. Ymmv.

I agree with IxnayBob–I think this would be a mistake. Sending them an update, though, about something new that you’ve accomplished would be fine (though it should be something important, not just more of the same things you already listed/discussed in your original application).

@IxnayBob‌ I still don’t quite see how updating an essay for the regular round is any less “unfair” than deferred EA applicants getting two shots at admission. Is that a commonly held view among AOs?

I’m not an AO, and don’t have a relationship with one to ask them, so I don’t know. I was simply expressing my opinion.

On an entirely different thread, someone asked if they could appeal a non-A grade in Expository Writing (Harvard). Gibby made the excellent point that college is not high school. IMO, the distinction begins with the application to some extent.

Applicants are usually counseled that they should not apply early if their application is not ready to present them in a favorable light. It is an important life skill to know when something is ready and when it needs a bit more work.

ETA: I don’t think that Adcoms wishing to have another look at an application is the same as submitting an updated essay; it was their choice to defer. I don’t think it’s two bites of the apple, but if you think it is unfair, withdraw your application.

ETA2: I reread that, and I didn’t intend for it to sound as harsh as it does. As a practical matter, I just don’t think AOs will react positively to an updated essay. You know what they say about opinions, right?

Don’t think they’ll consider a second essay. Will look at the SCEA one in the context of the RD applicants. No second bites at the apple.
